Opti-crap question ( the inside)

I have a quick question about this opti-crap. I was driving my car and it stopped. I got it towed home and found that I had no spark at the plugs. So i thought of the opti. Which I was right. The good old rotor blew apart. It craked the cap also. So I got a new one and put it back together. It runs like crap. The spark looks red and is missing really bad. The opti is still in the right spot b/c I didnt take it off the car to change it. I changed the coil also b/c it was arking everywhere. It runs on like 3 cylinders and smells so bad of unburnt gas. Got a map code too, but i think I just got that b/c of the way its running. I took it all back apart agian and looked at the opti sensor and the metal wheel on the inside. My question is...is it possiable that when the rotor blew apart that it hurt the sensor on the opti also....and if the metal wheel is not perfectaly flat will that cause it to miss bad.The metal wheel moves up and down as it rotates. Dont know how that would of happened..Maybe when the rotor blew apart it warped it....any help would be great guys.....please.....The car is a 95 lt1 6spd.

Re: Opti-crap question ( the inside)

I can tell you from experience when doing an opti job, replace the entire unit if your funds will allow. Going through Dal it is not that much more. Also here again from experience always go a AC/Delco(i hear their are a few newer aftermarket units now that look pretty nice), but never buy a remanufactured unit from Autozone. Put five of those POS on in about two weeks, car never ran right with any. Only one of them allowed me to go over 20mph, and I got to 25mph with that one.

Your best bet on opti jobs is to do the entire unit, plugs and plug wires and coil, if you have the means. Your already in it, I prefer to be done with it.

I would not trust an opti where the shutter wheel was not perfect.

Re: Opti-crap question ( the inside)

I put an autozone a1 cardone in mine and it runs great. Autozone has a lifetime warranty on it also, and its cheap with a $90 core. If these things crap-out alot..say it gets wet or something you don't have to worry about paying for another new one.. maybe im just cheap.. kris

My guess is the bearing in your Opti-Spark is defective allowing the rotor to make contact with the cap and the stainless steel wheel to move. If so, new Opti-Spark time.
