Re: opti cleaning?

Clean a fresh wet opti you might bo ok. Cleaning one that has corrosion and been wet a long time may be something different. Just because a waterpump leaks dont means the opti gets wet on the inside. Just a thought. If it is running ok, why fix it if it aint broke.

well cause it missfired pretty bad, backfired, and then one day just didnt crank. I took it apart to find some coolant or something was sitting in the bottom of it, inside and out now its clean. I dont kno how it affected the electrical parts of it tho. Its worth a shot i guess, if anything it may save me $200 on a new opti

Always worth a shot for cleaning. You might consider sealing it with some RTV when you put it together. What year is your car?

Re: opti cleaning?

did you say your car won't start only crank? if so it might be the optical sensor part and in that case you need a new opti. If you get it back together and it doesn't run let me know. I'll tell you how to diagnose it.

...although I have heard of people cleaning there opti's and it working. I have tried it on mine along w/ checking the wires and plugs and all kinds of stuff w/ no luck! Finally when the optical sensor had it and the car won't start is when I bought a new one. And now my hp is back.
...now I just got to get some headers and custom y-pipe to take care of that exhaust leak.

oh and to z28ssslp the opti. is our car's version of the distributor. It's called a optispark because of the optical sensor that reads the cam positioning. It sits under the water pump of are cars on the front of the engine.

Re: opti cleaning?

I believe my opti is what I'm fighting with right now. I drove to a friends house and noticed some coolant leaking. I popped the hood to find a loose upper hose almost slide off and leaking. The car hasn't started back up since then. That was Wednesday. We now have a fan on the motor to help dry some but I'm not sure what else to do. Keep feeding info.

Re: opti cleaning?

never heard of cleaning one but i guess cleaning it (free) would be a first option rather than replacing it ($$$$$)
