opti bearings....HELP!!!

ok, im sure with all my posts about having that high rpm miss that keeps becoming more and more prevalent in the lower rpms....i pulled my opti today...got it off in less than 2 hrs! well anyway there is a whole lot of play in the bearings....like i can feel it with my hands...im guessing somewhere around 1/8th of an inch of play..however the inside of the opti was as clean as a whistle...so im guessind that this play in the bearings is what is causing my miss????

More than likely, yes. How many RPM are you turning? The stock opti falls apart with high RPM and more power than stock.

The only thing in the Opti that seems to have a problem with high RPM is the rotor. There are too many people using the Opti for 7,000-8,000 RPM applications, with no problems after eliminating the high voltage function/rotor. Not sure why "more power than stock" would affect it. I've seen an OEM Opti support 1,125 HP at close to 8,000 RPM and provide an extremely accurate cam position signal.

Fred, you know more than I, no doubt, but I have seen several optis fall apart with stock power and RPM as well.

Please elaborate, does the main shaft move side to side or more in and out through the bearing. 1/8" is a big amount either way and certainly a problem.

That's definitely a serious problem. That much play would cause a LOT of spurious signals from the optical pickup, especially in the high resolution signal. I would venture to guess that a new opti will solve all your problems. Personally I'd suggest an MSD unit, from my experience with one they're built much more solidly than stock.

I have never seen that before. You might be able to find a bearing at a bearing shop. Make damn sure you mark the orientation of the two piece shaft before you press the two pieces apart or you will never get them oriented right when pressing them back together and the timing will be screwed.

You can scribe a line on the top surface of the two parts right under where the rotor button is installed. Or just replace the entire opti, I am a fan of the genuine GM opti personally.
