Open Exhaust = Loss of Low End Torque?

Anyone else notice this? I had a straight pipe on my MAC Headers until I got my cat shipped to me, and I noticed my car wasn't as strong low-end wise...starting out in first gear if I wasn't generous enough with the clutch I would almost stall out, however now that I have the cat on, my torque has returned (and the clutch chatters a lot less)...anyone else notice anything like that?

I just check your site...SWEET LOOKIN CAR
You have great taste, check out my page and you will see that we have similar taste
I am in NJ too about 20 minutes from Old bridge...Actually I bought my car in Oldbridge (SMALL WORLD)

Anyways, Yes a lot of folks that open up there exhaust, myself included (Borla cat back), on a Semi stock car (No power adder) would notice the torque at bottom decreasing but you will make up for it at top end. I cant help you with the Clutch chatter cuz I have an automatic. When my car was Semi Stock (Cold air and exhaust) I would notice that the bottom end torque would go away a little but it would pull a little harder at higher rpms. I tried changing my borla plates at E-town between runs and never really noticed a difference in "ET" but the "MPH" would go up by ~1/2 MPH or so with the Borla Open more. It would be interesting to see how my car reacts now the new mods.

Hope that helps a little,
Claude

Well I bought my car in Delaware...Some guy's step-son stopped paying his loan and since he was the co-signer, his credit started getting ruined, so he sold the car..or made him sell it. =)

One funny thing is, I've noticed about three blocks from where I live, there is another Silver T/A parked in someone's driveway..and it's an LT1. Weird.

And to add on for weirder..I was born in Rahway Hospital... But rack that all up to coincidence.

Yeah there is quite a difference, and quite a difference in gas mileage too!

I am running straight off the cat right now, damn stump ripped out the exhaust on the highway... there is a quite a bit of torque loss, but it does scream in the upper RPM's.

Thank God my Hooker catback gets here Monday!

i disconnected my exhaust where it meets in the middle of the car. I dont notice too big of a loss in low end torque, but the RPMS dont climb as fast as they used to

That indicates a loss in torque. The speed in which a car revs is a function of the torque produced and rotational mass.

No isn't that a loss of horsepower?

Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall...
Torque is how far you take the wall with you...

either way the loss of back pressure is robbing your engine of its power if you can feel any type of difference

Horsepower is a function of torque, I will see if I can get the formula for you.

Here is a brief topic on F1 vs TF engine rev speeds.
