Only One Cat..?

OK,

I bought the car used last August 2004. The cat on the passanger side has been removed. However, for what ever reason the cat on the driver side (canister looking, close to the engine) is still on. I am still running stock manifolds etc, and after market muffler. This is something that I plan on taking care of as soon as funds permit, but in the meantime:

Does this create an imbalance in back pressure, reduced performance, or other adverse conditions?

Thanks

my guess is that the guy probably just gutted the driver side cat since it's harder to put an off-road pipe on place of it do to it's location. Your computer will compensate fuel wise for that drivers side bank, though i'd imagine it's not a good thing.

Re: Only One Cat..?

Is there a way to accurately determine if the drivers side has been gutted without taking it off the vehicle?

Re: Only One Cat..?

Difficult to describe/compare. It's louder than stock. I don't have a way to record it and post online.

Re: Only One Cat..?

if you don't want to gut the other and you don't want to add another cat due to funding. I guess that your out of options until you buy headers or a y pipe.

Re: Only One Cat..?

I would be willing to gut it, but only if it's not already. Or if it is not creating too many problems leav it as is untill headers.

Re: Only One Cat..?

Your problem is, if you take it off to gut it you could easily break off some of the manifold bolts, which would be a pain to deal with.

Yeah, that would suck. I guess if its not bad for the engine then I will wait untill I get the headers to deal with it.

Re: Only One Cat..?

I just had an idea. My SES light is on because of the rear O2; Code pulled few months back. I Have recently got O2 Sims. If I put one sim on the passanger side cat (which I know is gone) and the light goes away Would this mean that the driver side Cat has NOT been Gutted? ..Just an idea, may not be a good one, let me know.

Re: Only One Cat..?

When I pulled the codes it was both rear banks. Chances are the Driver side is hollow. O2 sims changed nothing after install. Looking forward to madz28.com delivery.

Re: Only One Cat..?

if i'm not mistaken you should be able to tap on the cat and if it sounds hollow then my guess is that it is.

Re: Only One Cat..?

So does anyone know, would having only the one cat not hollowed and the other missing, cause a problem because of the un equal backpressure?

Re: Only One Cat..?

yes it does. Mine has unequal back pressure, thats what gm told me. I removed the pass cat. I have the other one still on, but no for long. Im going to get my rear o2's deleted by ion in a few weeks. that should solve the problem.
