Old Opti pics

I removed the distributor cap from my Opti tonight. Here's what I found.

The screw for the rotor was rattling around in there for who knows how long. I'm guessing the cap and rotor are original with 128,000 miles on them by the look of them.
The rotor wiggles around pretty good with one screw missing and the other loose.
I'm rather excited about this. I'm anticipating even better performance gains from the new cam after fixing this problem too.

I have 93 Z28 and it runs like crap. I see that you got yours out, so I was just wonder if my steps are right. Because I need to replace my cap and rotor. Thinking about the cheap summit Opti I for about $115. I HAVE NO MONEY.

1. Drain coolant, then take water pump-off.

2.Take crank Hub/pulley out, and make sure you mark it.

4. Mark plug wires, then remove.

3. Take the distributor cap off. Question What kind of screws are holding the distributor cap? Are they super tiny inverted torx?

4. Take rotor off.

5. Replace old parts and put everything back together.

Please correct my mistakes and add any needed extra steps.

Steer clear of the cheaper opti units. Too many people have had issues with them.

You can get OEM opti units from thepartsladi on e-bay. They'll be around $260.

Sure beats putting in a cheap opti only to tear it out again. Does the Summit unit have a warantee? If so, can you afford the down time and possible tow if it leaves you stuck?

You'll need an E-4 deep torx for the cap. You can also use one of the TB cover plate bolts in a pair of pliers if you cover the threads with a few layers of tape and you are careful.

Not the first, or the last time, we will see something like that happen. I agree with the above though, put up the extra money and buy a good Delco replacement. They are very reasonably priced on Ebay. Also, it wouldn't hurt to check out the classifieds on here. I bought a brand new opti from another board member for less then what it would cost on Ebay or anywhere else.

^^^+1. Do not just replace the cap and rotor, do it once, do it right, replace the whole thing.
