Ok, still trying to figure out this new engine, very close to calling it quits.

Im very close to just calling it quits and parting the car out for parts, 2nd engine that is giving me trouble. I now have finally found this "ticking noise", but its not ticking, its pinging. Its coming from my oil pan, I took my mechanics stethescope and found it, its right where the #1 rod is and its pinging consistently with the rpm's. There is no noise inside the drivers side head with the stethescope on it, its definatley in the pan. If I rev it a little, the noise gets smaller but happens more frequently.

It doesn't sound like catastropic like something bouncing around in there but more like something touching something too close. Im not sure what it could be. It can't be the rod hitting the cam (machine shop did the clearance and we checked it was at least 0.050) and I think i'd hear the noise further up also (which doesnt happen). I don't know what Detonation sounds like but I doubt it would be this consistent at idle.

Only thing I can think of is either something exploded again (ring or piston skirt) or the rod is hitting the oil pan near the rails.

Its a 95 Lt1 with a scat 3.750" crank (over 0.030)
Eagle SIR 5.7" rods
Sealed power forged pistons
Plasma moly rings
CC306 Cam
OEM lifters and 1.6 Comp Roller tip rockers.
Compression Ratio is 11.54:1 Dynamic was 8.62:1 I believe (or close to it).

Im lost hear, I had my neighbor who knows a bit about cars and he said he has know idea what it is, but it doesn't sound like metal clanking metal.

Could this be detonation?

I got some 93 octane gas in the tank but its about 5-6 months old. I changed the plugs again today and they all had excess fuel on them except the #3 which looked almost perfect.

Any idea's here guys? Im at my wits end, if something mechanical went wrong internally, im selling this **** once and for all, i've had it up to my neck with this crap.

Thanks.

No exhaust leaks either. So no false lean condition. I do have 42# injectors.

What exactly is your problem? Noise? If you think there is something hitting in the bottom then take the pan off. If you think you have some pieces in the pan but don't want to take the pan off then drain it and rent a bore scope and look in the drain hole.

On a 3.75 stroke, the block must be clearanced in 2 locations for several cylinders. At the bottom of the cylinders and at the oil pan rails. The general rule of thumb is at least .060 clearance. Do you know for sure this was done correctly?

Sounds like the crank is hitting something. Pull the oil pan. I doubt it's hitting the cam, probably the oil pan rail.

My thoughts exactly...what oil pan do you run? If its the stocker I am guessing thats the problem. Probably nothing major, def pull that pan off and see whats going on in there.

Don't give up. Believe me, I know how you feel. Just do some mental gymnasitics and then roll up your sleeves. Be determined. It's only a car.

And besides, you can't sell something that's broken and expect to come out anywhere near what you have into it.

It is easier to locate a problem causing a noise than to figure out later what caused a bearing to spin.JMHO
