Ok, let's have an oil filter discussion...

Ok, we seem to have lots of "what oil do you use", "what weight of oil do you use" etc. threads. I'm sure there has been an oil filter thread before, but let's get some ideas going.

I have been using Purolator PureOne filters, I have heard the upside to them is very good filtration, but the downside is not efficient as far as flow. I also have used the ACdelco ultraguard gold filter, and despite not having much info on it, it seems to be a good filter.

I guess basically what I'm looking for is a filter that is a perfect compromise of good filtering and good flowing. Here is the catch though- I don't want something I have to order like a K&N filter. Something I can go down the street and get at the local parts store. Here is what I can get my hands on around here- ACdelco, Fram, Purolator, Wix, STP, Bosch, Deutsche, Mobil 1($11.99 )

Anyways, personal opinion on what you like to use is more than welcome, also some test results would be great!!

That's what I would have gotten last time I did an oil change, but the parts house was out. I ended up with an STP, that was my best option.

I use a mobil filter, personally. I figure it is worth the extra protection. Do a search for this topic and you will find a lot of good info. I remember a thread a couple of months ago and it contained info on actual filter ability to, well, filter I think it rated wix highly cant exactly remember...

I have considered wix filters before, I haven't heard anything bad about them, I just haven't heard much about them at all. I guess I'll see what I can dig up about them.

mobil, is not giving you extra protection. Mobil filters dont flow oil well, they filter well, not flow though.

use a k&n or ac delco

Well I did find some good things about Wix filters online. Much of the info came from people that have fleets of heavy machinery- earth movers, tractor trailers, etc. It's hard to tell what would be good use in a vehicle like an F-body. They also said a good word or two about Purolator. I'll have to see if I can find the link again when I get home from work.

I didn't do any first hand research, but i was under the impression that the Mobil1 filter does a good job of preventing backflow so you get better lubrication on startup. Just something i've heard in it's favor. Until i see some strong scientific evidence i'm going to just trust my good friends over at mobil and not worry about it.

I remember seeing somewhere that the Purolator filter was exactly the same as some other cheaper brand, just re-badged, can't remember what it was though, so this is kind of useless hehe.

Go to this site and find the forums and put in oil filters for a search. It took me a while, but I found a test that they did on the flow of filters, and K&N and AC Delco came out on top. Frams were losing up to 22 psi from the inlet to the outlet of the filter. Not good. K&N and AC Delco were only losing about 5-7 psi. I will always use Delco probably since I own all GM and the K&N's are 10 bucks a pop.

I could care less about micron filtering since my oil gets changed VERY often (1500-2k miles, synthetic). I ended up running a truck filter (the thing is HUGE) made by Proline, the pep boys brand. Worked awesome for me so far, and its only 1.99

AC/Delco PF-35, it holds more oil and its easier to install and remove because of its size. Been using it that filter for about 105,000 miles, no complaints. K-mart usually has them in stock since nobody shops there for oil.

I am sure Patman will give the best answer to this question but from what I understand the K&N and the Mobile1 filter are manufactured by the same people. Many of the cheaper filters are rebadged (Penske is a Fram if I remember correctly) but the upper end filters have synthetic media in them as well as better endcaps and other features.

FWIW I use a Pure1 filter with Mobile1 oil.
(I used to run Mobile1 filters but with the Pure1s are about 1/2" shorter and I like to keep the filter away from the collector. )
