OK ... got my Kooks LTs in

>So I have them on the floor in the living room. Now I am debating... should I send them out to JetHot or Airborn and have them coated (in and outsides)? I know they are stainless but the underhood temps would be so much lower.

any opinions?

now to take the JeTHot LTs off what a pain this is gonna be!

why are you switching from jethott lt's to kooks?? that seems like a lot of money and a lot of work for a very minimal if any gain, plus for the price of the kooks i thought they would be coated

Dont waste your money getting them coated.I have Kooks uncoated. No problem with heat.I had coated Hookers before and was really disappointed in the coating. It works great while its on.Last 2-3 yrs tops.( I am sure some people in mild climates that rarely drive their cars will argue this)Stainless holds the heat in better then mild steel too.

When I get around to getting headers, it's coated stainless steel for me. I don't pinch pennies on my car. I vote to get them coated.

Uh, who said this is about "pinching pennies"?

Re: OK ... got my Kooks LTs in

I don't think it has anything to do with pinching pennies...I had my stainless LPE shorties coated by Jet Hot in their sterling finish and after a year and 4000 miles in good weather, they were dull and starting to look lousy. My new stepped stainless Kooks work fantastic and I left them uncoated because of my last experience with coatings. I don't have faith in the coatings anymore...As ,much of a pain as it is to do headers it would stink to yank them back off to get re-coated. Plus the Kooks look fantastic as they get some miles on them...kind of a golden color...

Re: OK ... got my Kooks LTs in

The problem isn't really the various coatings, it's more in the material that is being coated. If the coating simply has a dull appearance it can be corrected for the most part...flaking due to rust under the coating obviously can't be fixed short of removing the old coating and starting over again with a new application.

Everyone knows that keeping temps down in the engine bay is a good thing, even if there are no immediate observable problems caused by the heat source in question.

I don't think it's a waste of money.

Re: OK ... got my Kooks LTs in

Uncoated stainless on mine for a number of years and everything is just fine. As for cooling problems or temps mine were just fine. I have had bad luck with coating and so has everyone else that I have see unless the car is a garage queen and is never driven much.

If you drive the **** out of your car and also take it out in the winter or rain it will not last that long plain and simple.

I would have just kept your original headers but if you feel the need for the best get them coated.

This last time around I went with a black color coating since it is higher temp and looks better than the silver since it does not change its shine.

Re: OK ... got my Kooks LTs in

The only problem I have heard w/ coating is it flaking off when the underlying tubes start to rust. Stainless doesn't rust, so what's the problem with coated stainless?
