Oil Pump Questions

Alright I did some searching and basically know that I don't need a high volume pump for my car. I called my dealer to get a price on a stocker and he wants $125.

Now I was going to order a Melling M55 but I'm worried about the pickup design not being the same as the LT1.

And then I thought about the 10552 thats 10% over stock but I'm not sure on the pickup design on that. But this one comes with the steel coupler instead of the plastic piece.

Can I clean and reuse my stock pump and add the GM white spring and then get a melling steel coupler?

What do you suggest?

Use Dal or Jason and you won't have to pay $125 for just the pump.

oil pump 3/4" inlet 93442037

oil pump screen 3/4" tube 12550042

white oil pump spring 3848911

Should be less than $100 for all three parts.

Never reuse your stock oil pump... They're not that expensive, so if you want to stay with a stock pump, go out and buy a new one. As for the Melling, most of the reputable engine builders are using them. I can't see that many professionals being wrong. I used the Melling on my last car and just tacked the pickup tube in place...

Thanks, I'll send them an email to see what they say.

No problem it's a nice kit has everything. Dal has the white spring in stock.

Sounds to me like you may not realize the stock pump is made by Melling.

I thought you could re-use the stock pickup? I am getting the same oil pump, should I also get this pickup tube?

A stock pick-up does not bolt on and should never be reused (IMHO).

Agreed, it's a press-on fit.. and to me a press-on fit is only good once.

Especially for such a cheap part that's such a pain in the *** to get to.... and who's failure can lead to catastrophic consequences

So for the stock pan going with a Melling Mel-10552 pump, I should use this pickup, correct?

I am getting ready to order, just want to make sure first.

Doesn't GOLEN use high volume pumps on all his stroker engines?

Golen offers it as an option, I think it was about $75 for the pump, pickup and heavy duty drive. BTW, I called and asked him about the failures of that these pumps have had (see this post http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...light=Melling). He said that sometimes the pump castings interfere slightly with the rear main bearing cap and require clearancing. He speculated that maybe that had something to do with the failures. He checks every one he provides to his customers and said that he sells a couple hundred of them every year. No failures as of yet
