Put the pick up tube on the pump. Set some clay or playdo on the pickup tube. I would take some tape and put over the pickup so it doesn't get in it. Set the gasket on then push on the pan. Remove pan and measure the thickness. I believe it has to be a 1/4 of a inch to 3/8's
Here is how I did it.
Put the pump pickup on the pump and position it downward so it is obviously much too low. Bolt the pan on in the four corners and the pickup will be forced upwards by the pan. Once the pan is on and the four bolt are tightened, the pickup will now be dead flush with the bottom of the pan.
I then put a small magnetic level on the bottom of the pickup. It goes on the lower most round pickup section, not the scoop if you are using the OEM pickup. If you measure off the scoop, it will be higher than desirable.
Using a ruler and placing it under the machined part of the block where the pan bolts on, you can now take a measurement of the current position of the pickup via the magnetic level.
Raise the pickup 1/8" to allow for the gasket once you verify the thickness of the gasket you are using. Raise it another 1/8" to bring the pickup to a final its final height at 1/4" off the pan floor.
Check it with clay if it need the piece of mind. It should be good.
