Oil pressure issue!! HELP!

This first issue has been going on since i bought the car. The second just started this past oil change.

1. After an oil change i cannot crank my car on the ramps, if i do the PSI goes all the way up and i get a knocking sound...on the other hand if i push it down off of the ramps it will only do it for a split second. The first time it happend i had a nice grey could of smoke come out the back and i cut the car off immediatly.

2. Since the last oil change i have been running alot higher PSI when i first crank the car and drive it for the first 10 miles or so. It's been going up to about 50 psi or so while driving and idleing at 40psi. It used to only go up to about 45psi when idleing cold and would run at 40psi on normal driving and about 20psi idleing once warm. It does drop back down to what it was before after its all warm and has a few miles on it. I did tighten my valve cover bolts last oil change because the were pretty loose. Would that have anything to do with the change in psi?

Any ideas? Is this hurting my car? Could it possibly be my (stock) Oil PSI gauge?

Did you by chance switch to a heavier weight oil resently or use a different filter than normal.?

On that first startup while on the ramps, did you fill the filter with oil, or install it dry and wait for the pump to suck it through? If so thats maybe why you got a knock.

Warmed up where does it set at idle and at WOT? When I first got my lt1 it would go past the halfway mark without any trouble, before I spun my bearing I rarely got above 40 even @ WOT

Re: Oil pressure issue!! HELP!

I use 10w-30 and a wix filter...when its warm it sits at about 23 psi and at wot i goes up to about 52 on the stock gauge...now before i had this issue it would idle at 20psi warm and would never go over 45psi...that was before i used this wix filter. now that i have the wix in...i idle at 23psi warm cruise at 42psi and wot is about 52 like i said. but when i crank it up and its cold it sits at about 55psi for the first 10 miles or so then it starts dropping. i dont know why im having these issues.

Re: Oil pressure issue!! HELP!

sounds like you dropped the oil pick-up tube in the crankcase, at an angle (on ramps) you are getting oil starvation. Either that or a partially clogged screen in the sump.

The oil pressure sounds normal for a cold start and warm up reduction.
