oil pickup install

Hoping for a quick answer.

I'm needing to install the new GM oil pickup into my new Melling 10554 oil pump. I know it needs to be tight but how do I get this thing mounted into the pump?

Re: oil pickup install

They make a tool to help install the pickup, but you can use an open end wrench to essentially do the same thing. A 3/4" or whatever fits snugly on the pipe and next to the raised stop collar on the pickup.

Secure the pump so it cannot move. You're not going to be able to hold the pump and pickup at the same time. The pickup must go into the hole as straight as you can manage or it won't want to go in. It is a very tight fit and rightfully so. At the start, get the angle as close to final as you can. Use your old pickup angle as a guide.

With the pump secure, line the pickup to the hole. Use a hammer on the face of the open end of the wrench that is around the pipe and tap straight to get it started. If it starts crooked, readjust the angle and continue tapping. Once it is going in straight, it will be a little easier going and you can give it a good smack(s) to get it in. Be mindful of the angle and try to make adjustments before it gets all the way seated.

Hope this makes sense.

Re: oil pickup install

Rob is 'da mensch!

Everything went as scripted even though I didn't have a vise to secure the pump. I also did the freezer technique; don't know how much it helped but I'm sure it didn't hurt.

I didn't have access to or want to take the time to get the pickup welded to the pump but I did take a punch and staked around the connection in hopes that helps.
