Oil Pan Question

I have an oil leak on my Stock 94Z A4 on my timing cover from when I changed the gears & chain & was thinking of fixing it. If I unbolted the oil pan w/ motor still bolted to the mounts and droped it down would I have enough room to snake in the new oil pan gasket? Also, do you use any silicone/sealants on the new oil pan gasket?
Thanx.

Some people here have managed to be able to pull the pan far enough to get the gasket in there. You may have to turn the crank some to get the counterweights in the correct position.

I used Copper RTV in the corners an across the Timing cover and rear seals.

it can be done, but it is time consuming. if you are using a one piece gasket such as the felpro one.. it makes things a lot easier. you kind of need to go side to side with the gasket, letting one side of it fall into the oil pan and basically snake it to the other side, pulling it out and the lining everything up once you have the sides of the gasket on the corresponding side..

When I changed my pan gasket I just dropped the pan then slid the gasket under the outside of the pan. I pulled one side at a time up to the top until i got the whole thing over the edge. It's a hell of a lot easier than any other way I've ever tried and only takes about a half an hour. It also helps a lot to use a one piece rubber gasket.

Thanx Guys!

I'll pick a one piece gasket up & do this over Labor Day Weekend. If I understand correctly, with the one piece gasket, I won't need any silicone sealer ~ just put it up dry & clean.

you might wanna put some rtv in the corners such as where the timing cover meets the block, at the oil pan seal, then in the rear of the engine at the same spots, but that would be all you would need ...

I put a small amount of rtv on the rails, and then on the front and rear put alot of rtv...it will insure no leaks in the future...i also have the one piece pan gasket.
