Oil Pan
Ok im doing new heads cam and etc. I need to change the oil pan gasket, and i have done some research. some guy said just to jack up the front of the motor till it hits the tranny tunnel. where can i jack it up from the crank shaft( i dont have the balancer on or the hub just the crank sproket. ( Correct me if Im wrong on what i need to do plz= Remove motor mount bolts and tranny brace, and then just jack it up till i get the pan out?)

Re: Oil Pan
Orrr could i spray like 4 cans of brake cleaner in there from front to back (drain the oil first and leave the drain plug off) and then slide the new gasket on? ( I have two reasons for channging the gasket one it broke when i took the timing cover off and cuz there is some metal shavings that fell into the pan when i tried to drill out the cam 2 sproket bolts that snapped on me while driving.)

Re: Oil Pan
...perhaps you should enlist someone local to give you mechanic advice.
Don't use the crank snout to jack up the motor. The fact that you considered this option warrants my previous comment.
If you've got metal shavings every where and you're doing heads and cam, just pull the motor and do it right. Otherwise you're going to have nothing but problems and it's going to be a pain in the butt.

Re: Oil Pan
Drop the motor out the bottom and get it on a stand. Then you can get most of the shavings out, do the heads and cam easily, and do the pan gasket with ease.
Sometimes you have to buy the right tools for the job, otherwise you'll be doing it right sooner rather than later.

Re: Oil Pan
You can rent a cherry picker from u-haul if you cant borrow one. Check on you tube there are several vidieo's dropping it from the bottom. One guy used several jacks and blocks but if I were you, find a cherry picker. Also, based on your first post, you need a couple of buddies that are mechanical to help you with the process.

Re: Oil Pan

I was just asking ( i have never delt with the bottom end of a motor so thats why i asked). Asking is learnig and nobody every stops learing. Thats why i asked you guys.

Re: Oil Pan
I have done it using an engine bar to hold the engine from above and dropping the steering and k-member out of the way. You will need to do an alignment afterwards and bleed the brakes. Not sure how you flush the metal shavings though.

Re: Oil Pan
There is a post I created about doing this in the car with lots of pics but I'm guessing it's been so long ago that the pics were on a server that has since been removed. It's possible and not all that hard. Take out motor mount bolts, lift engine up a few inches the higher you can get it the better. Put wood blocks then under mounts for safety and then back out the k-member bolts enough to let it lower by about 1/2 in or so just so the bolts are in enough the hold the kmember then you have plenty of clearance. Good luck on getting all the metal out.
I'll try to locate the thread this eve.
