There have been people that have posted that they did not lift the motor to do pan gasket. I lifted mine and put a block of wood under motor mounts to do my gasket. Lifting the motor gives you some room to work with and makes it easier to clean gasket surfaces. Remember to remove low oil sensor so it does not break off when lowering pan and do not cut the gasket, its rubber, work it around the pan onto the seal surface, no cut needed.
I did the same thing that Lt1t56 did. It's much easier to work with and if you don't jack up the engine then you will not be able to get the pan out in one swipe without moving the crankshaft around to get the counterbalancers in the right spot to slip the pan through. It will save you time and frustration if you jack up the engine.
Like he said, don't forget to remove the low oil sensor. I forgot and broke mine, and it cost me $50 at the local dealership for a new one.
