Oil filter bypass modification.

An engine builder friend of mine reccomended plugging the oil filter bypass valve which will ensure that all oil passes through the filter. He stated that the only drawback to doing this is you must let the engine reach operating temps before actually driving.

I am talking about this thing here:

Anybody have any experience doing this and is it worth it.
Thanks

Let me clarify that this is done on RACE engines to get the maximum amount of oil through the oil system. Again this is done a lot on the track but I am wondering how it would work on a daily driver.

The existing bypass is used to bleed off excess oil pressure usually during very cold start conditions. It also allows the pressure to bleed off if the filter becomes totally clogged which of course means you have bigger problems.

Engine builder knows his stuff and does prototype work for Daimler Chrysler and builds insane race engines including 800HP four cylinders. Has very good credentials.

I will take unfiltered(bypassed) but pressurized oil over restriction when the engine needs oil most.

I could be wrong but if anything I think eliminating the bypass would reduce oil flow through the system by causing additional restriction causing the bypass at the pump to open sooner. I will honestly say I have not studied the oilpumps that closely though.

The only thing the bypass does is sense the difference in pressure from one side of the filter to the other. Under normal circumstances, it will never open but it there to bypass (hence the name) the filter if it becomes clogged. They figure that unfiltered oil is better than no oil. As was stated above, if you are in this boat you have bigger problems. Blocking the passage ensures that all oil goes through the filter which it will do anyway if the filter is not restrictive.

In a well maintained engine, this should never be an issue.

When I went to an air-air oil cooler mod, the T/A oil filter conversion had the filter bypass plugged. ("97" 383 - D1).

Most aftermarket oil filter adapters don't even have a bypass. I know the one I got from JEGS doesn't.

This being said there is should be no harm in plugging the existing one if it truly lets more oil into the filter.
