Oil Filter Adapter, ever replaced one?

I need a oil filter adapter for my LT1 block. GM parts direct said there are 2, one with plug/adapter/spring and valve, and the other part number is adapter only. I currently have the Vette adapter in the block, which is an offset adapter , which allows a smaller filter to clear the catalytic converter on a stock LT1, as the cats are huge.
Just curious if anyone has replaced theres, or taken theres off when they rebuilt there blocks, and know what the spring/valve and plug are for.

Yes, a couple on the Vette. The spring/valve is the oil filter bypass valve and the only type I've seen.

Any gaskets needed, or is the gasket on the filter housing all you need. Is it sailor proof, ie simple to do?

You removed your adapter? Did you have the smaller filter on your TA? Or was this on a Vette?
