oil cooler adapter plate help~~

hello, i have a few questions ., maybe ya'll can help.

the engine is a 95 lt1, came from a 95 z28. i know that it had an oil cooler adapter on it bwfore i bought it, the previous owner kept it. well , when i went to put the oil filter on, it wouldn't fit on, i believe i bought an ac delco #454. ( i think that was the part#) i'm assuming that i need to go and buy the oil cooler adapter in order to get this filter on....is this right?

looking up at where the oil filter screws in, there is 2 metal things sticking down, looks like the would fit into the adapter plate.. is there a way that i can get an oil filter on here without the cooler adapter? if ya can get a schematic, that might help me to explain it better.. thanks

You need the plate. The two metal things are guides for the adapter plate. Shoebox might be able to get you a part number.

Replace the two metal studs with GM part # 3951644 and you'll be fine. The oil cooler uses studs, without it, you need bolts

My cooler aligned using the two metal rods and then tightened up using a huge bolt drilled out for an oil passage with about a 25 mm thin nut on the end of it.

It's held on with the oil filter threaded bolt with a hex at its base, but the studs are there to locate it. They're replaced with bolts when you aren't using a cooler

Chevy makes an adaptor that attatches with 2---- 1/4 inch bolts to the block. These were used on all spin on filter blocks in years past.Get one from the dealer about $8.00.

I use allen head's but don't remember the length. There is also a clearance issue with a regular cap screw.

.I also run the LONG filter as for earlier year model's,like the extra capacity.

The original post says he don't have the adaptor, that the other owner kept it.So read the post before commenting

I read the post ....he said he doesnt have the "oil cooler adapter". Im pretty sure ,though not certain, he wouldnt try to put the oil filter on if he didnit see the threaded end of the standard plate to screw it onto. I also belive he referenced the fact that the plate is there in the second paragraph if you reread it. Maybe he can clear up what he has or doesnt have.

well, here's an update. after going back and forth to the dealer a few times, i have ordered the adapter plate WITHOUT the oil lines. i guess the make 2. now that i read the posts here, i'm going to go out and try to remove the "guide studs" holding that little piece on.... that is what's stopping the filter from spinning on.. if i can get to the store before they close tonight , i'll try and get some bolts that will hold in there instead of the studs..... and someone stated that regular hex head bolts have clearence problems? i would order that dealer part, but i need it by .....yesterday, i can't wait for shipping thanks so much for your help guys, btw here's a pic of my project, it's much further along now, i'll get some new pic's soon.... you can see the nice BBK that was swiped from me in there too

FYI, there is no difference between the adapter for the cooler and the one without.

I have both and they are identical down to the GM part number cast into them. You can order the other adapter, but what you need are (2) 1/4 inch bolts.

To be fair, oficially they do have different part numbers on paper, but there is no difference.
