oil choice for 194,000 mile Z28?
oil choice for 194,000 mile Z28?
alright, on wednesday im planning on changing the oil in my car, i have a half empty bottle of advanced auto parts 10W-40 in the back of the car(from when i bought it), so i assume that is what's in it now. i know synthetics are not an option with this many miles, but should i go with a lower weight? i was thinking 10W-30 or something. i know the weights have to do with cold and warm running temps, but how are they related as far as flow vs temperature(like, do the 10 and 30 mean that is a rate of resistance or a rate of flow at X temperature?). i was thinking about going with some mobil one or pennzoil brand. what do you guys recommend/think i should stay away from? also, ill change the filter while im at it, i've read a lot that fram is crap, what is good then?
and lastly, its been about 3100 miles since the oil's been changed, do you think an oil change + tb bypass would be a small seat of the pants difference? lol.

whoa??? 194,000 MILES??? do u have too worry about a rebuild? Im at 116K Miles on my 1994 Camaro, and I Think im runnin synthetic oil i think.. i just got an oil change a couple weeks ago? Guys? how do camaro's run after 194K.. are they still strong???
Re: oil choice for 194,000 mile Z28?
I thought 94's call for 5w30??????
Well I would recommend synthetic oil with an additive like Lucas oil treatment.
Synthetic oil lacks the swelling agent that is in conventional oil. Lucas oil treatment puts extra swelling agent back in. With the synthetic oil, you can go 6k to 7k miles between oil changes so you're not on your back so much.
If price is a deterrent then use a high milage oil which has extra swelling agent for old seals.

I run 10w/30 100% synthetic AMSOIL, in my '94 Z28 which has 131,000 miles on it, with no porblems. I change it every 4,000-5,000 miles, even tho the oil is good for 7,500miles.

If you say your oil is good for 7500...that's the AMSOIL XL 7500 synthetic blend...the 100% synthetic is good for 25,000 miles or one year.
However, I'm like you...I sill change every 5000 (just old habits and hey...it can't hurt, right?).
my car still runs like it's new...I want to see just how far I can go without and engine rebuild...I've heard of cars like ours going 200K +on the original engine.

^yea my bad it is AMSOIL XL 7500, but I change it every 4,000-5,000, because it cant hurt to have good oil, and that is one place I dont like to take chances.

It may cost a few more bucks...but IMHO it's well worth it in the long run.
Re: oil choice for 194,000 mile Z28?
25K is only going to happen under very good conditions like a highway car with an easy on oil motor driven sanely, the only one of those that applies here is the easy on oil. Still though as long as you know you are keeping silicon and fuel out of it 8-10K seems pretty doable from most of the synthetics and there is a test of Amsoil going 18K with frequent small topoffs to replace the couple ouces pulled for sampling every 1K. Topoffs like that can greatly extend an oils useful life.

i think ill stick with 10W-40, but use Valvoline Maxlife instead.
yes it still runs very strong. it will roast all the way through first gear and squeal/chirp second. on great condition michelin xgt z4s.
and on that subject one of the cars i've raced and beaten is a bmw z4. heh.
meh LT1 pwnzors r1ch duD3
