Make sure you fill the new filter up with oil before you put it on.

I dont mean to highjack this thread, but does it take 5 quarts of transmission fluid to fill an a4?

From the 1994 owner's manual:
Automatic Transmission
Drain and Refill . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 pt. (4.7 L)*

Overhaul
VIN Engine Code S . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17.6 pt. (8.3 L)*
VIN Engine Code P . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 21.6 pt. (10.2 L)*
10 pints is 5 quarts.

Automatics can be a little tricky. I ususally fill and check the dipstick often (and move the selector through the gears). You don't want to over-fill an auto.

Hey Shoebox,
Do you believe it is very possible for your tranny to shift weird if you overfill it a bit?

Re: Oil Change Help!!!

Over-filling can cause foaming and lack of lubrication. I would imagine it could affect shifting if the fluid supply was aerated.

Re: Oil Change Help!!!

it could be 4.5 quarts on the oil. every time i go to the autoparts store they try to sell me a 1/2 quart filter for my car which is the replacement now. i always have to specify AC pf1218 which is a 1 quart. im not a big fan of overfilling engines, so it just depends on how big your filter is. obviously get the longer one if you can.
