O2 Sensor Extensions: For lazy people?

I don't see why I couldn't just solder a wire extension into my existing wiring to extend them out, versus paying $50 for a pair of exensions...thoughts?

Jet Hot Long-Tubes on a '97 Formula, with OBD-I conversion.

If you know how much each side needs to be extended feel free to let me know...

It seems now with all of the forums, people dont want to do anything for them selves. Just measure it. But you want to extend the factory harness, not the o2 sensors harness.

Or you could flip the arguement and say those who solder in extensions are cheap and cut corners instead of using the right part for the job.

I need my driver's side O2 to be a bit longer with my headers. I've done the cut & solder, but now I have an extension.. I'm not against extending them, but to me the $25 extension just makes more sense. Was I cheap before and lazy now? I don't think so.

Not me I always extend the O2 sensor wires themselves. And I use crimps and not solder.

For Hookers, I did 13" and 6"...

Guess you didn't read my post about not bothering the O2 sensor wires, because they are used for providing the reference air to the sensor. I'm sure there are people that have extended them without incident. It's GM's recommendation not to disturb them.

The more posts I read about this, the more I believe it to be hit or miss. I extended the harness last year and had nothing but problems after I did it. I personally recommend just breaking your cheap *** down and buying the extenders.

Missed that one I did not know that!

But, I have yet to hear of anybody having problems with extending the sensors. Have you heard of any issues before other than just GM recommends not to do it? They also recommend to not put 500 hp in your Camaro but we do it anyway. LOL! Really though, I've got a number of friends (all cheap like me!) who cut the O2 sensor wires and nobody has any problems nor have I read of any problems... maybe I just haven't read enough? LOL!

You cannot solder the wires on the original plugs. They are silver plated wires with teflon jackets. You would need the same type wire and would have to silver solder w/a torch. Now you know why they are 50 bux. I extended my own by adding 2' to each, and crimping them w/ silicon connectors.

It is a problem if you keep the sensor from getting it's reference air. With all the ways people do things, you can see that there is some potential for messing it up.

It's hard enough to figure out if the O2s are actually working as they should anyway, so why add to any uncertainty if you don't have to?

I extended my harnesses.... started at 2' each side, and trimmed to fit.. then soldered the other end on... Solder, Heatshrink every wire, heatshrink the bundle, then Kevlar sheething over the entire harness...

All military grade solder, wire, HS, and sheething...

and it won't hurt anything doing it the way you did, same here, all that military training paid off , so long as it's sealed, like materials, soldered, etc etc it'll work fine.

I bought a 94 harness from this site, and was told that there was no cut wires. Well guess what connector was cut off? I tried using copper wire, and my car runs like crap. I dont know if its the wire thats making it run like that though. I had no choice but to extend my wires. where do you get this special type of wire.

Yup... My dad works for Harris RF communications building Military communications equipment, he's one of a handful of Security Clearenced Techs.. he builds custom vehicles for our government and other allied governments... some INSANE stuff...

I'm and engineer for a company that builds Aircraft Lighting products, Military, Commercial, Private, and Business...

So.. between MIL and FAA specs let's just say I know how to do things that last and stand up to a beeting and have the supplies at hand to them...
