Non CA cats on CA car

I have a magnaflow cat which is not legal for use on 1996 and newer obdII cars only in CA. My question, Is there anyone here in CA that has tried using non CA cats in CA and passed emmisions with them, whats the difference between the 49 state legal cats and the california 50 state legal cats.

I have a Carsound cat on my 95 Z28 CA car. I don't remember it ever saying anything about being 50 state legal or not. My smog guy just looks to see if I have a cat, not what brand it is.

But I have an OBDII (1996 and above) car and they use different cats than the OBDI (1995 and below). There are 2 different kinds of OBDII cats, the 50 state California legal and the 49 state non-California legal. What is the difference? If I put the non-CA cat on my car would I fail emmisions in California. I am asking beacuse I bought one off ebay and I didnt realize it was the 49 state legal, non-California cat.

Magnaflow does sell a CA/OBDII approved cat. I have two of them
on my car. Have not had to smog the car since they were installed so
I can't say about the smog test yet. And as for the difference, I would
say about $100 because the cats cost me $200 each.

The difference, in general, is that the manufacturer of the 50-state cat has paid a bunch of money to demonstrate to the CARB that it works as well as the OEM cat, so then they get an EO #

As said above, most likely you will have no problem.

Re: Non CA cats on CA car

i am running the same cats on my 97 camaro but my next smog inspection isn't due for another year or so. i was told by several guys that it isn't a problem. i figure the last time i passed smog, my passenger side cat was burnt to toast and i still passed so running these carsound cats wouldnt be a problem. hardest part is findind a place to install 'em. that driver side cat is pretty tricky.

Even though my car is a 95, my Carsound cat is about half the size of the stock cat. Smog stations don't investigate the brand of cat you are using. Deleting the cats, or relocating them is a different story.

I had it done by Rob from Stricly Performance down in southern california where i'm originally from. i'm up in nor cal for school. rick at synergy motorsports will be able to do it for you. from your posts it looks like u have a v6? single cat? rick should be able to just swap the cat in. you could also try going to a local exhaust shop, but i tried that w/ 4 places in L.A. and got denied by all of them since its illegal for them to put the cat in your OBDII car.

No, I got a Z28, for the drivers side cat their is a bolt-on cat from summit racing that replacecs the whole pipe. I hope they pass emissions since they are not the California OBDII cats

This is the one I plan to put on the passaenger side http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...953012166&rd=1

And this is for the driver side cat type CTO-9162 for part# http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...earchType=Make

Both are the 49 state OBDII smog legal cats, so I dont know if it will pass smog on my car in California, Any opinnions would really help

Re: Non CA cats on CA car

So are there any deffinant answers. I plan on putting these cats on my car by the end of the week, Will they pass the smog in california even though they are not the California obdII compliant cats. They are just the regular 49 state obdII cats.
