no cat or resonator?

I went to my local muffler shop last weekend to have my cat taken out of my 94 LT1 Z (already have magnaflow catback and edelbrock shorty headers w/y-pipe).

The guy there told me to replace my cat with a resonator instead because he said it would be too loud if I went with a straight pipe. So, reluctantly I agreed. The car sounds good now but how much power did I give up? Would it be too loud if I ran a straight pipe?
