No cat or gutted cat
I just recently got a flowmaster 80 series installed on my 93 z28. To enhance sound (and performance) I would like to take the catalytic converter off. I have seen so many rides on this forum have it done. I just am not sure exactly how everyone is doing it. I would like to shove a pipe (2 1/2 or 3 in) inside my cat and then just reweld it to look like i have one but i am not sure if that would fit or work.any tips or suggestions would help. I heard someone say if i just gutted it there would be a droning noise in the car above passenger seat because of the open space in the cat.
do 93 z28's have 02 sensors after cat or just before?

Re: No cat or gutted cat
get rid of it all together if you don't want the cat. I have read that leaving it on can cause turbulance because of the large space the cat would have if it was gutted. Its a lot easier to just weld a pipe in there.
Re: No cat or gutted cat
Dude at my local inspection station (Raleigh, NC area) said that "even tho NC no longer requires emissions testing of OBD1 cars, there is a visual inspection.... and I've got to check for cats"...
So.. I'd like my ride to look like the cat is there, but be "gutted"...PITA I know, but that's what I'm stuck w/...
procedure to do this?
thx

Hey, just get it flanged on each end and have a piece of pipe flanged so you you can bolt the cat. up for inspection and have the straight pipe when your not being inspected. This is what I did but with the flowmaster 80 and no cat. it makes a annoying poping soung around medium (and up) throttle acceleration. I have heard that you can put either a borla or a dynatech race muffler on your straight pipe and it will get rid of the pop but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. O and make sure you so the muffler shop cash when hes deciding on a price.
Re: No cat or gutted cat
Right now I have a gutted cat with a Mac headers and a Hooker catback. I have mine on there for any possible roadside visual inspections. BUT I put flanges on it to remove & install a highflow quickly for my next inspection in 2 years! LOL I have NO vibrations or anything in mine, it just sounds wicked!

Get rid of the cat. A gutted cat sounds like ***.
I don't think those pictures are big enough.
