Hey guys. When I get my new wheels, I'd like to get a set of Nitto DRs. I've heard they do hell on rear ends though. Now when I drive around in the street I'm usually not a mad man, launching at every light, but when I take it to the track and I going to expirence problems in the long run? Just post your expirences.

 

M6 with decent launches will probably tear the rear-end up.
A4 you will be alright.

 

Any time you have a hard hook there is a chance of breaking something. I broke a rear with BFG drag radials.

Generally automatics are easier on rears than standards.
Generally drag radials are easier on rears than slicks.

It is the launch shock that is the worst. Some golks have run for years with the stock rear, others have broken it right away. It depends on the driver, the track, traction, age, wear and tear, and many other variables.

 

M6? A4?

Either way you may want to strengthen your stock rear some with a rear cover like the TA and also add a stud kit. It will help some. M6's are harder on stock rears at the track with DR's than an auto. There's always the chance something might break launching with an M6 and DR's, just a chance you take.

 

i however do drive like a mad man, no problems yet i launch it hard at the track, they do whine but they have since they were installed

Put it this way, M6 cars, even on the street can granade a rear and I have heard stories of A's people doing it on street tires.

I personally avoid DR' and Slicks until i break my rear and at which time i will get a Moser 12-bolt Or strange rear.

Personal exp. My buddy had a 94 T/A with less than 40K on the clock, he had it up until ;last fall, he had to swerve a deer and hit a tree (he is fine, the car got wreaked). But the car was a old women driven car (yes it really was), and he ran Nitto DR's 245/50-16's i beleive and he put down 2.05's to 1.98's for 60 foots. Its been my beleif, as you dont go below a 1.8's 60 foot, with out at least strengthening modifications to the rear, your looking at a busted rear.

Mods you can do to strengthen the 7.5" 10 bolt GM rear,

Weld the axel tubes

T/A (company) rear cover girdle

Eaton HD posi unit

GM motive or Strange Gears (NOT RICHMOND!)

Also proper break in and proper offset and intallation.


In www.fbody.com a person by the name of Joe Spena (RamAir95ta) he post here too, is currently on his 4th rear, he broke the other 3, and is running 1.81's to a best of 1.78 60 foots.

If your wallet doesnt accomindate a 2,200 (fully optioned) moser rear, getting the 10 bolt upgrades are better for you, the are recommended.

 

The rear gear on the 4th gen is a tad smaller than the rear end on my 240Z, add another 1300+ pounds and a bunch more power/grip, and you can see that GM didn't do us a favor in that department.

I broke five 10 bolts... 1 at the track and 4 on the street, before I gave up and got the Moser 12 bolt. My car is an M6, and I run Nitto DRs. Usually the rears dont break on my launch, but on shifts.. 1 on a launch at the track... 2 on the 2-3 shift on the street, and 2 on the 3-4 shift. Dont count on it holding up. Its not if its gonna break, its when its gonna break.

 

If I break my rear at the track can I still drive it home?
