Is nitrous SAFE???

Sorry guys, I wasn't sure where to post this to get the best knowledge and most responses so I put it in LT1 Tech and in the N2O section.

PLEASE HELP ME GUYS

I just bought a NX Wet Kit for my '95 Z and it just came in today. I got all of the safety stuff as well. Now my parents are being @$$es and are going to make me ship/bring it back to where I got it from.

Here's what I need help with:
- I need help proving that nitrous is SAFE. Not "my engine won't blow" deffinition of safe, but I need to show my father that if I get in a car accident that the nitrous won't in his words "explode and disintigrate(sp?) me". I just him. I am so mad and I need all you guys to chime in and prove my father wrong please so I can keep this.

If you could take the time to help me I would really really appreciate it. Thanks a lot in advance.

Thank you very much,
Jake

I believe that N2O on its own won't explode.

However, if nitrous does escape and there is a fire nitrous will fuel a fire but on its own I think thats what a N2O blow off tube is for is to route nitrous that escapes from an f'ed up bottle.

I'm a nawzzz amatuer though I'm sure you'll get better advice soon

Tell ur dad he watches too much Fast and Furious.

Nitrous Oxide is NOT a flammable chemical. If u had a little fire burning on the ground, u could spray it with N20 and it would put the fire out, not make it roar.

The only danger with N20 is MISUSE obviously. But ppl "misuse" thier F-bodies all the time. Just promise ur dad u won't do anything stupid, like spray it in a 25 MPH zone or something, and u should be ok.

Just drive smart and safe when ur on the street

In THEORY, u could spray the whole 150 shot of N20 on a stock motor with a faultless fule system, however that seems to be the limit.

However, even with safety equiptment, i wouldn't spray more than a 100 shot on a stock bottom end rotating assembly. Unfortunately, our cars didn't come with nitrous pistons, H-Beam Rods, and a SCAT forged crank So I don't think we should spray it like it does.

Use the search button...that's what it is there for.

Those questions have been answered eleventy billion times before.

But quickly....with all precautions ie. FPSS, window switch, WOT, colder plugs, race gas if need be, etc ad nauseum....nitrous is fairly safe. BUT it's really not a question of if but when....hyper slugs are fragile and a little detonation has big effects.

But OTOH many people have used fairly significant sized shots on stock motors (150+) and are still running strong.

i honestly believe if you cant afford to blow the motor, be it financially, or some other reason, then leave it alone.all it takes in one mistake, one. and you ahve trashed a motor. run lean once and say bye to the pistons, asme with detonation.

i replied to your other post on this in teh n2o forum, nitorus isnt flammable.

If you guys know of any, are there any websites to prove that nitrous will not explode in an accident? I was thinking that if this doesn't work for my dad then I'll go get some nitrous, put it in a balloon and light a lighter while I let out the nitrous, that should convince him.

thanks for all the help so far, the more support the better though.

Nitrous isn't a flammable chemical. Driving around with a pure oxygen tank would be more dangerous.

Here's the MSDS for N2O (Material Safety Data Sheet)

http://www.vngas.com/pdf/g3.pdf

Clearly states that it is not flammable, just an oxidizer.
