Newbie to LT1s...
Hey all,
Just thought I'd finally introduce myself and tell my story. I am an extreme 3/S fan, and recently sold my slow Stealth base model, I was going to buy an TT but I am going to save and wait until I'm older and can afford to maintain one.
Anyway, for the time being I want something that I have always wanted... an LT1. Right now, I am looking at a red 94 Z28 with 83k. Hopefully I'll get down to the dealer soemtime this next week to check it out, they are asking 7,995. Hows that for a price? Seems a little higher than KBB value. I don't know for sure though, seems like something to work with. Its an auto, whats the comparison with a manual? I originally wanted a manual and only that but have come to find that manuals are very very hard to come by, and only founda few but they sold before I could check them out.
Alright, the point is my first mods... I've heard headers are good, and I'd also like to get either a borla or flowmaster exhaust. Which is the route to go that won't run me too much money but will be the best bang for my buck, sort to speak. How much do these things cost? Where can I get them? That type of thing is what I'm looking for.
Thanks for the help in advance, can't wait to get a hold of a LT1.

The LT1 will be more fun to drive that Stealth TT. I know because I had one
...Anyway $7,995 for 94 car with 83K is way too much. I bought my 95 Camaro with 85K (with custom hood, custom wing, and F1 ground effects, flowmaster, chrome wheels) for $6600. The price depends on where you live, but I would not but a car from a dealer (they change at least $1000 more that the car is worth-they have to pay their own bills)...Try to search in "FOR SALE" section, sometimes they have some great deals (or www.ebay.com)....

Wait around untill you can find one with a manual if that's what you want (good choice
). Otherwise you'll constantly wish you had a stick and will probably end up swapping out the tranny (big job). If you're dropping a few grand on a car (not a beater) then make sure it's exactly what you want (right color, right drive train, right options, etc.)

Whoa! WAY too much for that car. I got my 97 Z with 80K miles for $8200. Find a better deal...
About the exhaust...it depends on what you want. If you want a good exhaust sound, then go with Flowmaster...in my personal opinion, NOTHING sounds better than Flowmaster. I don't care what anyone else says, Flowmaster gives the best sound...period. If you are looking towards performance, then I hear Hooker or Borla are the best...but I'm not a fan of Borla's sound, so I don't prefer it.

Before anyone else says it there is a search button close to the top of the page and it will shine light on all your questions. Believe me I learned so much from it and this board.
Headers are a Great mod and Hooker LT's are the best if you dont have strick emissions, and you can get custom duals with x-pipe and bullet mufflers cheaper than any cat back. Flowmaster catback do sound good, but it is agread on this board that they do have the least in performance. Price is around $300. Hooker is a great catback for sound and performance and it cost around $300 also (I think). Borla is my favorite and sound the best IMO for a catback but it cost over $600 which is to much for my taste. I would also wait and try to find a 6 speed if that is what you want. My car is getting the true duals with x-pipe and bullets this tuesday.
Along with the Hooker LT's, man I cant wait. The true dual setup is costing only $175 installed and that includes the x-pipe. The only thing I have to get is the 2 bullets which are $35 a piece so the entire thing is around $250 installed. You cant beat that.
Kmook has a sound clip of true duals on his car I am sure someone has the link to it.

Hey I definately agree with you that manuals are hard to come by. I'm having a hell of a time finding one myself, but about first mods.....I'd say Hooker Catback is a good choice for performance/price. You can pick it up from Jegs for $262 I believe. Another good mod to get started is a cold air induction, such as Moroso or the K&N FIPK. You can get either of those for roughly $180, or cheaper if you can find one used.
The funny thing is both shops quoted me the same price for a custom dual setup as a custom y-pipe setup. I guess they dont like to make y-pipes around here. The most expensive shop around here wanted $400 but that included the mufflers and the cheapest was $250 which is because he is a friend of a friend.
Well i previously owned a 94 stealth r/t non-turbo. Now i got this car. I will say i like both cars about the same so far. But i still haven't really gotten this car running right. I was trying to decide between lt1 or a TT 3si. But my insurance was a lot more for that car for some reason. I also coudn't find any good deals on one. As for exhaust you will find many different answers. If you like it real loud but not to smooth sounding i would say slp loudmouth would be the way to go. But don't get headers with that system because most people say it sounds crappy after you do. I did a lot of searching and i decided to go with the hooker catback. The price is good i got mine for $280 shiped. Its sounds better then i thought it would real nice deep and smooth sounding. But i would keep looking for other cars because that seems a little high for a 94 with that many miles. I got a 96 for 9800 but it only had 50,000 on it. So i think i got a pretty good deal. Just don't rush into it because you will regret it later if you don't get exactly what you want.
Thanks guys for all the responses, We'll have to wait and see about mods. Every LT1 I've found around my area has ranged from 6k to 10k... usually all the 6k's have VERY high mileage...
How should I go about talking him down? I'd still like to check this car out, simply because sadly this is one of the lower priced LT1s I have found here in MA.
I wouldn't mind it being an A4 that much, sure I'd rather have a M6 but I wouldn't keep kicking myself for it. These cars are both awesome, and they run similar times. (Correct?) So, I'd still be very happy as long as it had t-tops.
