new timing set need help
new timing set need help
i just put a new timing set into my 1994 t/a. i got it all put back together and it would not start. so i took it apart agian. pulled the optispark off and the seal for it. i was getting no spark so i was lookinng here first. when i pulled the seal i so i could see to line up the opti i noticed there is nothing to line it up with. i put a stock timing set on it. it has the gear on the back for the waterpump and everything but i do not see provisions to run the opti thru the hole. isthe opti is drove from the end of the cam or the timing gear its self?
Re: new timing set need help
There is a small gear looking shaft that is about one inch long. It comes in and out easily and runs the opti I believe. Check to make sure yours is there and you didnt drop it during install. It should be right in the center area of the timing cover just a small little thing. Sounds to me like you are missing that little gear drive.
Re: new timing set need help
no, no i have that. it just has nothing to go into. my question is dose the shaft connect to the cam gear. or is it the cam. well i pulled it all apart and there is nothinf there. i am sure that the cam gear iw where this is supposerf to be. that is why a normal timing chain will not work. i just do not know for sure. and i can find no good pictures or explainations. thanks
Re: new timing set need help
From the sounds of it, you're going to have to start all over. You ordered the wrong parts. 1995+ timing sets are not compatible with the 1994 optispark (-specifically, the 1995 cam gears can't accommodate the 1994 opti's splined shaft).
If you're using a stock timing set, you need a GM 10128349 cam gear.

Re: new timing set need help
man this stinks. it is all apart and the guy at the part store gave ne the wrong part. they had it in stock so i took it but they have to order the right /one of course. so who has a good aftermarket rooler set for this car anybody?
Re: new timing set need help
If i were you i would get the lt4 timing set, and make sure you get the right one this time, and if your using the stock gasket, you might wanna replace it, after taking it off and on 20 times im sure while you were debating, i believe summit racing started carrying those gm parts, like the opti and lt4 hotcam, and roller timing chain kit, you could get it from there overnight shipping im sure.
Re: new timing set need help
the one from summit the lunati one will work for your car for sure, go to summitracing.com, its only 109 dolalrs, its a deal, lunati is very respectable, better than the lt4 kit.
Re: new timing set need help
i went to summit racing. could not decifer which was the correct set for my car. there is no info on the site anywhere. i went to gm parts and ordered the sprocket since i have new chain and sprocket already. stock chains are the same on lt1 thru ls1. it was like 35 dolaars total. there is a big lack of info on this. i can not believe the diffrences between the "same" motor.
Re: new timing set need help
There is no lack of information on timing sets if you run a search here in the LT1 tech forum.
The 92-94 Lunati timing set is part number LUN-93094. However, it looks like they stopped calling it an "LT1-specific" timing set, which has me curious if something was changed. Regardless, the manufacturer could not explain why the Lunati was any better than stock -- looked to be another stiff-back/linkbelt chain -- NOT a roller. I couldn't personally recommend it.
Your only real options on a 1994, other than a stock-replacement, is to upgrade to a 1995 cam/opti/timing cover, OR get a $400 Cloyes, Or get a $550 Doug Rippie set. My guess is that you're probably not too enthralled about any of the above, but you can find more info by running a search.
I would personally go tear into the parts store that was responsible for giving you the incorrect part, and make them refund your money on the gaskets and coolant. That's the LEAST they could do for such an inconvenience.

Re: new timing set need help
yeah no kidding. at least i did not put water in it or i would be ready to kill. the whole reason i did this was the optispark so if i would have put water in the car i would be in jail. i have done several searches and the only ones that net me any info are the ones i started about it. evrything else is 95,6 and 7 thanks
