Im doing the cam kit install from combination and the person thats installing wants to know if i need the new timing chain with the install?

My stock one came off with 120K miles and NO slack. For Peace of mind I still put a new one on.

 

Yeah, new stock replacement timing sets are cheap anyways..there is no sense in not getting one.

 

What kind should i get...where....and how much ruffly are they?

 

Well, I just called a local parts store to check. They said somehting like $60 or so for a new stock replacement one. Depending on the year of your car, you can get a LT4 heavy duty chain or whatever..but those things are costly.

 

That sounds like just the chain. Do the chain and both gears. Mine was a little over $100 for the kit.

 

Nah, that was the whole deal, i asked. they said they had ones that were more expensive too...just a matter of preference.

 

Does anyone have part numbers? I have gotten 3 different part number from Crane Cams and Summit already sent me the wrong chain. I have a 1993 LT-1 and nobody knows what timing chain will work.

I don't think that part number you gave will work man...I am almost positive that it will only work with a electric water pump and converting to a vented opti spark. If that is what he has done then, he can use any double roller timing set that will fit a factory hydraulic roller camshaft.

 

Correct. That is the chain I ordered from Summit CLO-9-3157...no good.

 

Seems like there has been a lot of past threads about timing chains. But i have yet to really completely understand what i need as well. I am going to a double roller chain and an electric waterpump. Do i have to go to a vented opti-spark, and whats so much better about the vented opti anyway? Also when buying the chain does it also come with the gears?

 

Well, from your name..i am gonna take a wild guess and think you have a 96 trans am. If you have a 95+ car...you already have a vented opti-spark. Which means that, you can run a double roller chain if you have an electric water pump.
