new member exaust questions. Please help!
Hi,
I want to purchase jet hots new long tube headers but have a couple of questions. When running long tubes, and no cats, what additional parts would I need? What I mean by this is do I need a y-pipe? I know I need two oxygen sensors(97 LT1) and I'm going to buy a cat-back but is that all I need? Also, will I get more power ot of long tubes than shorties and if so how much? One more thing, how badly will ground clearence suffer? I am going to lower my car soon! Please help!
Thanks

parts you'll need:
if the headers do not have provisions for emissions (such as air tubes), i beleive you'll need to block off the EGR with a plate. these can be made fairly easily i beleive or you can buy them (do a search for where). you mentioned O2 sensors, what you'll need is 02 simulators to replace the rear sensors. you can reuse the front sensors if they are not too old, just install them back into the bungs on the headers. you will probably need 02 extensions so that the wires reach the new locations. or you can just splice in some more wire, whichever you feel more comfortable doing. both simulators and extensions are available through thunder racing. yes you will also need a Y pipe, either buy an aftermarket one from someone like mufflex or have one custome fabbed up (commonly done).
one ther thing you will probably need is some type of plug wire looms, to keep the wires away from the hot primaries...some guys use tons of zip ties and stock wires and have no trouble, i think if you are carefull, you can manage. a good set of wires and "over the valve cover" looms are available from thunder racing.
long tubes will giv eyou a bit more power, typically they will gain you more torque over shorties than they will hp. exact numbers are a highly debated topic.
most guys say that you will have trouble with clearance if you use long tubes and a lowerd car. others say they use sportlines (2" drop) and have very little trouble. usually it depends on the style collector and type of ypipe i think. i think it's safe to say you will lose a litttle clearance, whether you can live with it or not is up to you...
hope this helps...
