new heads and cam in, but need help..

Okay just had my cc306 cam and p&p heads/crane gold 1.6rr's and comp pro mag. hyd roller lifters. holley 58mm. t.b. and opti and madz28tune. driving home from shop, car seems to be hesitating from around 1500-3000 if just cruising, feels like surging. when I get on it, it runs great, but really anoying when just cruising. also there is like pretty loud lifter ticking, but the lifters are new, and new header gaskets and bolts. could the rr's be out of adj. would that make the car hesitate and ticking noise? and also the exhaust has really changes. I have pacesetter LT's. and hooker catback no cat. it use to have a deep growl, now sound good at idle or low rpm's. but when rising rpm's it cackles really bad, almost like glasspacks. sounds funky, can the have something to do with the rr's maybe out of adj. I am going to check plug wires tomorrow, but they are pretty new moroso's. and new tr55's with .045 gap. any ideas..oh yeah opti is used but low mileage. idles fine, and wot fine, just surges at low-middle idle..

Did you get it tuned. If not that is the first place that you need to start.

Your timing might be off, and that's tough if all you can do is mail order tuning.

Re: new heads and cam in, but need help..update..

put the car on my autoxray it is running really lean.. 160blm's on each side..maybe that is why the car is surging.. can a bad opti or rr's not adj. right make both sides really lean. checked headers for leaks none, checked for vacumn leaks could not find any. checked afpr, not dumping fuel down vacumn line, checked plugs all tight, plug wires good. not really missing, just stumbling or surging at lower to mid rpm's.. at a loss any other ideas? or do you think it could be the tune? madz28 did the tune, set it up for a 43.5 wot fuel pressure, now told me to run it at 43.5 lbs at idle to help with running lean...

Re: new heads and cam in, but need help..

I have been fighting the same thing after my cam and head swap. I tried everything from changing opti 2 times to adj. valves(many times), coil, icm, tps, and the list goes on. two months of it. Then I took it to Jeff Creech at Carolina Automasters, a few minutes later I had picked up 53 hp, 62 pounds of torque over my mail order tune. The surging was 90% gone, since then he has sent me several tunes that have fixed the problem completely. I never would have thought the tune would make that much difference.

Yeah, a custom tune (dyno or mail order) will probably help.
The cookie-cutter tunes are just not designed for your custom setup.

My mail order tune DROPPED me .4 in the 1/4 mile AND

My gas mileage went to 5 mpg. That doesn't include the racing in the MPG quote....that is highway and around tow driving in a relaxed way. I had to double check to make sure I hadn't erred.

That's when I slapped in my other PCM and it went back up to 22 mpg average.

Re: new heads and cam in, but need help..

i have been having the same problems on a bauer custom cam and lightly modded stock heads. i have a mail order tune from madz28.com. i can't say the tune is too bad as far as fuel (I'm netting 22-23mpg with 3.73's and a 6 spd with this large cam on the highway of course.) but i have terrible surge from 1500-1700 rpm, especially when decelerating. I don't really want to go to a dyno tune at speed inc because i will then have to run lt1 edit...but then again, I think it'd be worth it.

Johnny who did your mail order?

PM me if you dont want to post it on here.

And the rocker could cause a loss of power ... If it is too loose, it will tick. The knock sensor will pick up the tick, and retard the timing making it run like crap. However, it shouldnt be cracking up at WOT in the higher RPM's thats from it being lean. You need to get it tuned and richened though ASAP ...

Good luck

lifter tick from the preload being a bit loose will almost never be picked up by the knock sensor. maybe on an lt1 knock sensor with way too loose of valve lash.

Re: new heads and cam in, but need help..

I have just been doing alot of research on this cam as well, and a few guys on ls1tech.com said that that cc306 had quite a bit or surging around 2,000, but then it made ALOT of power after.

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=507637

In the middle they start talking about the cc306. Hope this helps!
