new guy needs help please

I've recnetly bought a 94 z28 its been giving me problems since i got it. The day i drove it off the lot the guy had washed the motor and the car was running like crap. After the car dried off a little it ran better but still had problems. I made the guy put it in the shop to find out what was wrong. The mechanic replaced the computer and said that would fix it. Now I'm still having trouble, the car runs fine for a while but all of a sudden it will cut out like it is not gettiing any gas and just dies. I sat on the side of the road for half an hour tried starting the car, it fired right up and drove fine all the way home. It's done it twice since and I cant figure it out. I did replace the fuel filter but that is about it. I know relatively little when it comes to this car, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, I just ask for patience. I've been reading through the other posts and feel like i'm only on a fourth grade level compared to you guys. I hope someone can help, all suggestions welcome.

thanks

the car has 81000 miles on it and appears mostly stock
has after market sunpro oil gauge and a homemade starter button

The opti could have easily gotten wet after washing the motor. Washing LT1 motors (with water) is not very well-advised, and can kill an opti-spark in a hurry.

At a minimum, I'd try taking the cap and rotor off and see how it looks. If it's worn, replace it. You might want to replace it anyway since it's kind of an involved job once you get in there. Otherwise, clean it out, put it back on, and see what happens. Good luck.

Just replace the whole opti.Dont bother with the cap and rotor. The opti is the distributor. Its on the front of the motor where all the spark plug wires go.Its driven off the camshaft.right under the water pump. The early years 94-95 were non vented, and subject to corrosion inside.

When the car is running, wiggle hte harness and connector for the opti-spark and see if it dies. Also, check the opti-spark harness for corrosion down in the connector. My Z was doing the same thing and it turned out to be a loose wire in the connector. Had to rebuild it.

It seems I should definately look into the opti being bad. If it becomes necessary to replace it is there somewhere I can get it cheaper than my local dealer. So far from other posts I see that auto zone replacements and the like are out of the question.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS

I put in a Niehoff cap/rotor almost 2 years ago. It's working just fine.

I looked both cap/rotor assemblies over carefully when I changed them out and could find NO difference in materials or build quality.
