Re: New aftermarket power steering pump from Turn One

I burn them up constantly when i turn my car in the upper rpms over 7 grand. The bad thing is all the rebuilt ones last much much shorter than the stock ones. Going on number 3 on heathers third gen LT1 swap.

They're $225. It's a worthwhile upgrade IF you run your car in alot of autocross races. For cars that are mainly used as daily drivers, or just go in a straight line down the dragstrip, they're overkill.

The stock LT1 power steering pumps are known as "CB" pumps. The achilles heel of those pumps is that they were engineered to use a bushing instead of a bearing. About the only advantage the bushing setup has is it runs a little quieter. (VERY little.) You might want to consider changing over to a "TC" pump, which was found on most of the C4 Corvettes. They were engineered with bearings instead of a bushing. I read an article from a guy who worked at Saginaw and they used to play around with those TC pumps and spin them up to 9K for a solid hour and the pump never got over 300 degrees. Alot of the TC pumps were made of aluminum too which meant they dissipated the heat quicker and of course were lighter as a bonus.

Here's an aluminum TC pump from Summit:

Go to this link and type in part #MCH-P315

Have you ever put one of those pumps on an LT1 F-Body? Two words: Reverse Rotation.

Yep, just intalled one 2 weeks ago as a matter of fact. I ditched the stock accessory bracket and installed the pump low on the driver's side of the block.
This is not to say that I HAD to do it that way: I went that route because I switched over to a custom alternator bracket that moved the alternator to a mid mount position so I could run standard valve covers. (Without the alternator "notch.") The stock accessory bracket can and has been modified to route the belt so that it turns the pump in a clockwise fashion.
