Take off your shift **** and your shifter panel. You can pull your gear shifter down to 2nd, but will notice there is a small black cube blocking your 1st gear. Heat up a small knife or have something sharp and cut the block off. TA-DA, 1st gear is there! hope this helped ya out.

Thats because you have 2.73 gears. There is a peice of plastic that you have to get rid of. Take off the console piece and dremel the plastic piece that holds the shifter from going all the way back. after that, it will be good to go.

my console lifts up from the back so that you're pushing toward the front (or radio). i didnt take off my shifter. just lift the console up an you'll notice there is a small black plastic cube about .5 square inch in size, blocking the selection for 1st gear. i simply cut it off with a knife. pull console back down and you're set. really shouldnt take more than about 5 min.

I don't know about you guys but I have an A4 and 1st gear has always been accessible for me. I have never had to cut anything.

It had to do with a drive-by noise requirement with the 2.73 gears when the car was held in first gear. To get around it, they just made 1st gear non-selectable.

Silver Z28 : You have 3.23s from the factory. So you can access first like all other factory A4 3.23 equiped cars.

so you can do this? just hope you don't accidently bump the shifter down while your driving.............

So i'm guessing there's a plastic piece blocking the reverse also?

one more thing, what's a good way to get a good start off with an automatic?

Not for reverse. It just prevents a car with 2.73s from putting the car in first gear. Just cut it off as stated above.
