New 383 engine... what should I expect?
New 383 engine... what should I expect?
Well, after owning my 94 z28 for about 5 years, the original engine is trashed. It had a really nasty coolant leak, and my exhaust system ended up being a very expensive waterfall with coolant pouring through the engine. I ended up getting a pretty good deal on a 383 stroker from a builder in Texas, so I'm in the process of swapping it in. It's a pretty mild build, but according to the builder it's running about 365 hp.
I was just curious what kind of performance I should expect and what it will run in the quarter mile. I have a few bolt ons already, namely a set of pacesetter midtube headers, a hooker cat back exhaust, hollow cats, an slp cold air intake, a ported intake manifold, and a 160 degree thermostat. It's also an optionless ( no power windows, door locks, cloth seats) car with t-tops and an A4. I'm not looking for a strip car, just a nice fast daily driver with so go to it. Would it hang with a brand new SS or 5.0 mustang perhaps?

Is it from Herb G(not putting last name). If it is a few areas of concern first the crank is prone to breaking unless you opt for the forged upgrade. Second the base cam isnt a good choice. If you opt for his roller rocker upgrade beware cuz he uses ones prone to failure. If it has not been built then pay a little extra for some better parts. If its his motor another member has one and his times were not any better than stock.

Re: New 383 engine... what should I expect?
Yeah, it is from Herb actually. I heard the eagle cranks aren't so hot. Would it make sense/ be difficult to just swap out that crank and put in the one from the bad motor? I'm not sure what sort of shape the original engine is in, but it was flooded with coolant which I can't imagine is good for it. I didn't get to roller rockers, either. Chances are I probably won't be keeping this car for too long anyway, I'm getting it put in by a mechanic while I'm in Navy bootcamp, and I'd like to have something to drive around while I'm in A school in Florida. Outside the engines at advanced auto and autozone, Herb was the cheapest I could find and he seemed like he was reasonable after a bit of investigating on google from some of his other projects.

These are the specs he listed:
The cylinder heads recieve all new guides and positive seals, with a 3-angle finish on the 1.96"x1.55" valves and 100# springs. The heads are surfaced, providing the correct clamping force.
The "EAGLE" cast steel 3.75" stroke crank and ProComp 5.7" I-beam rods, are balanced, allowing the use of your original ballancer/flywheel/flexplate. SpeedPro (10.4to1) compression pistons are fitted with SpeedPro moly rings. Premium Clevite engine bearings are installed, set with the proper oil clearance for this performance engine.
The camshaft providing 365hp and 410ft.lbs.torque, spec's are (220/224` duration at .050" with .505" lift on 112`LSA). A new Cloyes H.D. timing set and roller lifters are installed, with factory valvetrain preset, for quiet operation. A complete gasket set and NEW oil pump with screen are included, allowing easy completion of engine. Optional ($300.00) Stage II cylinder head porting available, boosting output 30hp!! ** Also available, a FORGED steel crank upgrade for only ($300.00) extra. ** The last photo shows OPTIONAL aluminum roller rockers ($200.00) extra.
I'm guessing it's only 365 hp he's claiming because of the heads and cam most likely

Re: New 383 engine... what should I expect?
Weak cam for a stroker
Low compression for a stroker
Short rods for a stroker
For the performance built into this engine, you could've gone with a rebuild of your stock engine.

Re: New 383 engine... what should I expect?
My block this one with the head upgrade and all bolt.one. I have not seen a dyno or anything besides a mail tune and I got 13.8 qm at high altatude. Not great but my old.engine expired.
Re: New 383 engine... what should I expect?
Sorry badzee......I was out of line.
Anyway.....I would expect this engine to provide about 320HP/TQ at the wheels.
More compression and longer rods will increase your torque. The compression can be handle via a head upgrade with smaller combustion chambers. LE2 heads with 51cc chambers (may require shorter pushrods) and a dynotune could net you as much as 45/50HP with this set-up. I'd also opt for the thinnest head gaskets available for the LT1.
Best of luck!
