need some sending unit help quick!
hi all,
i have a few questions for everyone, and any help will be appreciated.
will the computer function correctly if i do not hook up the FACTORY oil pressure and water temp senders? i'm guessing no. the reason i ask is that i have 4 seperate sending units that i need to install for my pro-comps: coolent temp for the guage, coolent temp for the warning light, oil temp sender, and another oil pressure sender for the warning light. i also have the oil press sender for the guage installed above the oil filter.
assuming that i need to keep the stock senders in place, how should i go about doing these? i tried to get all of the coolent plugs that are in the heads off, and they will NOT budge. i think the builder either jb welded them, of locktighted the s*** outta them. either way, they are NOT coming out.
i fit the oil temp sender into the oil pan. (it's aftermarket, and had a spot for it) so that's all set. is it ok to tee off the upper rear of the block with the oil pressure sender. i figure that will cover my warning light sender and keep the stock sender for the ecm. now i'm stuck on where to put the coolent temp warning light sender? it's bigger than the stock cts. and i also have the sender for the guage, i 'm thinking of installing my headers, and then tee off the drivers side cts, and run the factory one and the one for the guage. i've just spent like 3 hours looking all over the place and i'm still clueless as to how to plumb these. keep in mind that i cannot drill and tap the block, or waterpump housing, i really need to do this with "home depot" type connectors.( i know, ghetto style
) i only have a few days to get this straightened out...
if anyone has pics of how you have your senders , then shoot them my way. lunchbox@***.net or post them up. thanks in advance,

Provide what car you are talking about and heed the TTT Abuse sticky on the top of the forum.
There are pics of all the sensors on my Tech Page. F-bodies don't use an oil temp sensor from the factory, so you are just going to have to tee in to plumb it.

thanks for the reply shoebox, and i appoligise for not reading that sticky. sorry bout that, won't happen again.
my vehicle is a 89 gmc sierra with a 383 lt1/t56 swap . the motor and tranny are from a 95 z28.
i usually don't bump stuff unless it's a time issue. this particular question i had is important that i get an answer from some people that know more about it than me. i'm actually leaving right now to make a trip to buy the tee's and compression fittings, so i wanted to see how everyone else wired them up so i didn't waste a lot of time and money on parts that are not needed.
i reread my post , and it confused me
so let me rephrase. i'm asking how and where people ran their guage sending units from, and can i remove the stock sending units without harming the ecm functions. is anyone else running an autometer warning light? i plan on using the big red warning light, and using 2 warning senders for it. one for coolent temp, and one for oil pressure. the oil pressure can jsut be tee'd off the back of the block i assume, but the coolent temp sender , is bigger than the stock temp sender, so i'm a little confused...
thanks for your help, and no more bumps from me

As far as the computer goes, you must retain the temp sensor that is in the water pump. The computer needs that for temp readings. The temp sensor in the head and the oil pressure sensor are just for the gauges and it does not matter to the computer if they are there.

excellant, thanks, 1 question tho..... when my engine lost oil pressure, the computer shut it off. how did it know? knock sensor??

i don't think so... when i took it in to the local vette place, they said that in order to get it running, they disconnected the sending unit, and had to run it for a few seconds in order to check the oil pressure. it started and they saw no pressure, so they shut it down. all i can tell you , is that when it dies on me in the middle of the street, it did it as i came to a stop. i tried to start it a few times, and it caught right away, and then died, like the spark was shut off. i waited a min or two, and then tried again, and that's when i heard the knocking of an engine without oil pressure
i had it towed from there. it's not a big deal if i have to run the stock sender and tee my warning sensor off of it, i jsut wanted to make sure that the computer didn't need it....
