Arrow Need some 700R4 advice....

I bought a '93 Z recently with a bad engine. I got a new low mileage engine for it, but I'm concerned about the 700R4 that's in it right now.
I've only driven the car at like 20 MPH because the current engine was knocking pretty bad. So the only thing I know about the tranny is that it shifted smooth from 1st to 2nd at that speed.

According to the previous owner (which knows next to nothing about cars) the tranny shifted fine. I don't know if I can rely on this though. Plus, the old engine was weak and if I put the new engine, it may kill it after a couple WOT runs....

So before I swap the new engine in, what do you think I should do?
The car has 130K miles and I don't know if the tranny was ever rebuilt. (my guess is that it wasn't)
I also noticed a lot of oil around the tranny pan and bellhousing today. I don't know if it's the intake leak, something else, or it's the tranny that is leaking. I'll have to check that again tomorrow.
So should I take the chance or should I just buy a 4L60E? (since I'm converting this car to a MAF harness anyway)
Thanks!

IMO If you are not going to do anything extreme, just keep the 700, I'm looking for an M6 now, when I find one you can have my 4L60E It's not bad right now, but I'd rebuild it.

Tough decision.
I would go with the 4L60E. I just had mine rebuilt and I love it so far, its shifting nicely and has not done anything wierd even after a couple quarter mile passes the other nite.
You should know Ion, the 4L60E will be easier cause you can program it with the PCM. The 700R4 you gotta mess with the TV cable.
The 4L60E gets alot of flak for reliability issues but if you have the right person build it then it will last as long as any other tranny, to a certain point of course.
