Need Programming After High Stall TC Install?
I'm not sure if this is my trans, so that's why I posted this here.
Anyway, I've had a SES for ever, and finally got it scanned. Turned out I was getting a weak MAF signal. The car has basically been running off the long-term trims using the o2 sensors. So, I take it out and clean it (the correct way), and that problem is solved. I take the car out to test it, and notice that the car is climbing to red line quickly, and shifting slowly.
Today, I drive it to work, and try doing some acceleration tests from a dig. When I floor it, and the tire grab complete traction, the car stalls for a second, then jumps to about 4.5k RPM, and then jumps to red line, and acts like it's bouncing off the rev limiter until it shifts into 2nd, then everything is fine.
If I floor it form a stand still, and I get a little bit of wheel spin, the car will accelerate hard, and shift perfectly.
A month ago, I had a minor refresh of the trans done, and had a TCS lockup converter that ended up being a little higher stall than I thought it would be. The stall is actually looking to be about 3.5k RPM. I would think that maybe this was the problem, but the car had been performing flawlessly ever since it was installed.
I tried unplugging the MAF so that it would run off of the long-term trims as it was before just to check, but it's the same thing.
What the heck could be going on???

I thought it was OBD I only that needed that, but I figured I'd check.
I figure that if it was just the trans slipping (which it shouldn't since it had a mild rebuild done when the converter went in), then it would just slip all the way to red line. It doen't take off at the intial hit of gas, but the RPMs don't raise either. If the engine revved, but the car didn't go, then that would make more sense to me. It actually causes a bucking motion, like the engine is cutting power. Man, this sucks!

Re: Need Programming After High Stall TC Install?
i had a BTE converter in my car once and it was huge. i could stall up to 3000 on street tires on the street. and since i have put the heads n cam n stuff on i cant get my car to shift and i have a whole different tranny and and a vigilante 2800 and transgo and it wont shift to save its life. it was shifting fine before the swap and will shift as long as youre not at wot. i know people say the obd1 thing but with the other stall it would shift fine and it was a bigger stall and it would even shift on the spray. now it wont even shift at wot not even when you kick in the passing gear and it changes back out.
I hope your tranny issues get cleared up. That would suck to put all that money into a combo, and not be able to use it.
As for me, my tranny did go out. On my way home from work, I heard a couple of pops, and then 3rd and 4th were gone.. I had the pleasure of driving over 1.5 hrs home in second gear going 30MPH.
Now, I'm out the hundreds of bucks I paid to freshen up the trans a month ago, and now I need a beefier transmission.
Beware the pleasures of a high stall converter on the stock trans.

Now I didn't read every little detail of the thread... But I didn't notice anywhere where you said you installed a secondary transmission cooler to compliment the higher stall torque convertor. Without the additional cooler the trans would get to really high temps pretty fast and we all know heat kills transmissions.

I was referring to the original poster with that quote. For you I would say double check your fluid levels. Low fluid could do that. Also torque convertors have different specs other than just stall speed. It could be a "mushier" convertor causing you to run into the dreaded OBD1 problem. I am not really sure. Maybe you could temporarily lower your shift points by a good amount and see if it shifts at wot just to test?

Yeah, I installed I nice big B&M cooler. We checked the fluid, and it looked good.
I guess it just couldn't handle the torque of my mighty LT1.
