My car's fuel pump is only putting out 23 or so PSI when it should be in the high 30's. What kind of fuel pump should I get to replace my stock one, and what kind of specs should I look for when shopping around?

The Racetronix one is an option with the guy being a local board member... but I would like some suggestions on other good pumps to get just to see what my options are... I may have to go local to get this work done in the next day or 2 so I may not be able to go for the Racetronix. Should I go for a stock replacement from GM? Or are aftermarket pumps far better, my car is near stock and won't be modded to heavily in the "near" future, only lightly. I don't want high end, but i want something thats good value for the $$ and for what my needs are.

My other problem is that I'm going to be going on a trip this weekend (work related) and need my car. How bad is it for the car to be on the highway for a few hours (2-3) when running lean? I really need an answer fast on what I should do.

I'm also not sure if its my fuel pressure regulator or the pump, but from what ive gatherd most people feel it's the pump. If anyone has some info on how to check if its my Pump or Regulator PLEASE let me know. The Car runs lean at certain rpm's, and i get 23PSI or less when driving, 23 when idle, and 23 when the keys in the ignition.

for a 125.00 bucks you can get this pump. Granted the Raceatronic pump has better parts like wires and hoses.. I dont think I would pay the price of a GM pump.. You could rent a car and still have money to spend..Walbro pump

 

I'm having the same problems....the car is running like crap....I ordered a walbro high pressure fuel pump...hope it will be here this week.....Does your car feel really slow with that fuel psi? I know mine does....

 

like 100% total Crap. Your's is running at the exact same PSI as mine too? howd you diagnose it was the pump and not the fuel regulator?

 

You can check the FPR by taking off the vaccum hose and seeing if it smells like fuel. If so, your FPR diaphragm probably ruptured which would give you FP problems.

Otherwise, it's probably your fuel pump.

Also check for kinked/bent lines and a dirty fuel filter.

There is a vendor on here selling Walbro 255lph pumps for $100! Great deal--check the GP section.

 

Make sure you have a new fuel filter on there and never run your tank down to empty. You risk overheating the pump and killing it or filling your injectors with crap.

 

hey JSK33, Generally what happens when the FPR Diaphram ruptures? (I'm assuming a ruptured diaphragm would cause one or two specific symptoms).
Would a constant PSI of 23 (drops when driving) be one of these symtoms as well? I'll try the sniffer test

 

The fuel will pass through into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose. So you'll be running rich too.

I don't know if it'd keep the FP at a steady number or not. Just know the symptoms from others here.

Probably, but make sure you check/replace the fuel filter and any kinked/bent fuel lines first.

 

Well installed a new pump and now my car runs FAR better than before. I checked the PSI with key on in the ignition and its around 40 now and stays 40 when i start the engine in idle. The dang hose is too short for me to tape onto my windshield though
Shouldnt it be a bit higher than 40 with the key in the ignition and drop down to 40 when the engines idling?

Perhaps i have a pressure regulator bad too?

 

Did you change the filter too? It could have stuff in it from the old pump going out.

My car idles around 36psi and at WOT is about 43.5. Ignition on is around 40 or so.

 

So it helped out a lot....i should be getting my pump in by tomorrow but won't have time to put it in until thursday....I bet my car still runs like 13.9's right now on 24 fuel psi.....i can't wait til i get the new fuel pump in to see what it will run.

 

Yea put a new filter in at the same time. I'm gona try and get a longer fuel pressure hose or something... my low rpm stumble still is around but much less noticable. I wonder what it could be :/

 

You can simlulate WOT by removing the vacuum line to the regulator when it is idling. The pressure should go up. If it does not, you probably need a regulator. Pressure is normally lower when you are just idling (and the vacuum line is connected to the regulator).
