Need info on these cars !

Iam looking for a 94-97 z28 Camaro and would like to know some things first. Stock they have 275hp right ? What is that in the quarter mile ? Are they bad on gas ? gas prices are going up and iam not sure if i want to buy a gas hog. what's the top speed of these lt1s anyway ? I found a 96 with 130k but iam a little worried about mileage. With all those miles would it blow up if I dragged it ? with a few mods could i achieve 300hp with an lt1 ? ooh and do these lt1s have distributors or does it fire on the crank ! sorry for dumb questions.

Re: Need info on these cars !

Hey..whats wrong with 93's?? J/K...93-97 have roughly 245rwhp ( at the wheels ). Stock times vary I've seen anywhere from 13.5's - 14.5's...depends where you are, weather it a auto or six-speed, and if you are a good driver. I ran a 13.8 bone stock with mine, I am now running mid 12's with many mods and it still can get 20mpg on the highway. Top speed...never tried it but I would think in the 140-150 range. 300hp is easiely acheivable with bolt-ons ( catback, headers, cold air induction, a good tune, free mods)...WARNING: modding these cars isn't cheap!!!. With a 130,000 miles...only the previous owner could answer that. If it was taken care of you should be fine...I know cars with more than that on them racing. The major probem with these cars seems to be the distributor system...it is called the optispark...opti for short. It is driven by the front of the camshaft and it buried behind the waterpump. It works in conjunction with a sensor on the crank. Get the opti wet, fork out $300 for a new one.
The possibilties to these cars is endless...I've owned MANY of the 60's and 70's "muscle cars" and by far have had the most fun with my 4th gen LT1!! Hope this helps...

Re: Need info on these cars !

Yes 275 flywheel. Few get that deep into the 13's BONE stock. Most at least have tires or something. I know I was a 14.5 guy when I got the car. Should be able to nip a 12 out of it now.

A 6 speed stock will get ok in town mileage and great highway. Close to 30 on the highway.

They stopped making the Camaro so they could make more soccer mom vehicles to raise the price of gas / insurance and increase highway accidents.

Parts are sorta expensive, labor is nasty. I wouldn't own one if I couldn't do my own work to it.

What else you need to know?

Yea...and in '96 they were rated at 285. Still pretty similar hp to the wheels. Just a warning, you're only going to get good gas mileage if you drive conservatively. The temptation is very great to hit that gas and go around people and what not. So you're only going to get 20 mpg if you stick to the speed limit.

The LT1 has a distributor that incorporates and optical cam position sensor, hence the name "Optispark". Big problem is the distributor is mounted on the front of the engine, driven off the cam. Is can be a major problem if it gets wet. Replacement is very expensive, with a parts cost of about $300+ on the 93/94 unvented model and $200+ on the 95-97 vented model. Unless you replace it yourself, labor can add significantly to the replacement cost.

Re: Need info on these cars !

Thanks once again ! Iam beginning to like this site. http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/mitsu...UyN1uZQXGEfr8F

ok so when they say the new eclipse has 263hp do they mean at the flywheel or at the wheels ? Damn that thing must move right ? I wonder what the torque output is. by the way what is the lt1 torque output ? Most of the time when companys talk about hp they tell you the hp at the flywheel right ? Iam 15yrs old and am still learning so thats why i ask dumb questions. 300 dollars isnt a problem for me and my dad is a mechanic so iam set with any problems.

Re: Need info on these cars !

Any advertised is going to be flywheel ratings.

HP is not the only thing that makes a car fast. Those new eclipses have to weigh as much (maybe more ) as an fbody. Also gearing and transmission comes into play. Then certain marketing groups will stretch that as far as possible, kind of like k/n saying 17hp for an air filter.

Cars are getting pretty quick, remember the lt1 is 10 years old now. But still very respectable.

Looks like the new eclipse (according to your site) is 263hp/260tq @ 3500lbs. So topend is not much below an lt1, while the v8 has an advantage down low. My camaro is actaully lighter than that though. But I bet it is at least fun to drive. Mid to high 14sec 1/4 I would guess... not bad for a v6.

TQ will make you laugh on most imports. I think stock on an lt1 is just over 300ish?? I know with longtubes I did 325tq. You do know that horse power is base on tq right? Something in the ballpark of tq x rpm/5600 (something akin to that) so when you spin a motor to 8000rpms, you end up multiplying the tq by @ 1.42. Most stock cars will peak hp right around that magic 5600rpm. However, on spray because of our crappy heads I actually peaked hp @ 4500rpm. Thats why lt1s have such a huge gap in hp/tq. I had 280hp/325tq.

Hope that helps a little. Remeber its no one thing that makes a car fast. You need hp/tq/weight/everything to work together.

Re: Need info on these cars !

This should be able to provide some info, I found someone who copied the 1994 Camaro vs. Mustang comparison from Car and Driver magazine to the web. If it doesn't provide enough info, it's still an amusing read.

As for myself, the 95 Firebird Formula A4 I had with a cat-back and K&N CAI used to run 13.8s. I have not yet tested my current 94Z28.

Re: Need info on these cars !

an eclipse wont even compare, you will have easily a couple car lengths down low in no time. The torque that LT-1's put out is insane! And with a few mods you can be close to 375-400 range. That will plant your *** in the seat pretty hard!

id say the average time for a stock lt-1 would be 14.2ish... i ran a 14.4 at 98.xx mph.

If your concerned about gas mileage then what in the hell are you looking at a sports car for??? They are for driving not looking at, now if you have lots of money and all you wanna do is look at it then go right ahead, otherwise bite the bullet pay for the gas and quit crying about it, Hell milk is 3.00 a gallon but you still buy it right.
