Exclamation NEED HELP!! Terrible noise from passanger rear wheel!!!

The car was driving fine, then this afternoon when my car (A4) went into second there was a loud THUD (like a pot hole sound) that came from the rear wheel. I thought I hit a hole in the road, then when I came to the next stop light and started to go again, when it went into second it made that same noise. What do you think it could be, shock, spring...????!!!! I have no idea!!! And the thing is I just blew my money on a catback!!! Thanks for the help.

If it only happens when you shift gears and is not constant, it is probably the transmission mount.

It is weird though, it is only comming from that back wheel...it is a real terrible sound...I seriously thought that the rear end was going to fall out from under me. What are the symptoms of the tranny mount? Thanks shoebox! P.S. It only happens going from first to second...and it doesn't make a noise going from second to third to fourth...hope that helps.

hey, mine started out making a thud just like that not too long ago. it would only thud going from first to second. then, with time, through second and third as well. now recently i started noticing it when i hit a light pothole. i changed out the shocks and struts, but that didnt fix it. so i'm going to change out the springs tomorrow or thursday, so i'll try and let you know if that helped at all. mine is doing the exact same thing. the noise is coming from the rear end. if that doesnt work, ill go for the tranny mount. ill keep you posted. hope this helps.

Since you just got a cat-back on it recently...maybe there is some point where the exhuast hits and is making the noise. I would check this first.

actually, I just bought it and it hasn't arrived yet. It is not installed yet, but is on the way and the money is subtracted. Any other suggestions?

Check the tranny mount first... drivetrain noises like to travel around and sound like they are coming from somewhere else.

I had this exact same problem, changed shocks, u- joints, pulled the rear end cover. Finally gave up and brought it to a tranny shop. Tranny mount. Cheap and easy fix. Get under the car and push on the tranny you'll see it move.

Thanks Benny Boy and burn rice, I will check it out for sure. I just can't believe that the noise comming from there is the tranny mount(I believe it, but man!!!). I mean, it sounds terrible!! I really apreciate the help...hopefully it is going to be a cheap fix.

How long can I drive it without damaging the transmission, if it is the tranny mount, is it safe to drive it? I would probably just drive it to the tranny shop. Also, if the mount is broken is it damaging the transmission? Thanks.

It costs so little for a trans mount, like 30 bucks, whats the point of not fixing it or waiting around? Its been so long I can't even really remember what problems it causes, I got an ES mount and it hasn't caused me any problems and its been a good 2 years.
I think not fixing it can cause problems, but didn't wait and see what. Prolly mess the linkage up after a long while.

Yeah, I plan on fixing it asap...I wasn't planning on waiting around or not fixing it at all..infact I plan on taking it in the morning. I just didn't know if I should really drive it, because of how bad the sound really was. I would get it towed if I were going to really destroy any thing down there. Thanks.
