need help with oil pump shaft install

Hey all, I need to install a new oil pump shaft in my firebird, and have a few questions. First off I installed the new oil pump and shaft when the engine was out, but I forgot to put the little "sleeve" at the base of the shaft where it goes to the oil pump. Well the engine is in the car now and I was just wondering, If I just pulled the intake off and took out the pump gear that goes where the dist normally goes, could I just install a new shaft like that? I want to get the arp oil pump shaft and it already has the sleeve on it. Will I just be able to drop it down in there and it will work or is there a problem I'm not seeing. I don't really want to pull the motor again but if thats best I will. Just trying to save some time since summers comming up fast Anywho sorry bout the long post just want to get this right.

Thanks all
Later
Josh

I am not sure the oil pump shaft sleeve will fit down through the hole.

Assuming that the sleeve will fit would there be any other problems? And if it wont is there any other way to do it without pulling the motor? Like I said If I have to I will.

Thanks for the fast response btw.

As long as everything is engaged properly, there should not be a problem.

Re: need help with oil pump shaft install

You will not be able to slide the Arp shaft through the top as the collar that goes around the oil pump shaft will not fit through the hole. It must be installed from the bottom.

Melling makes a shaft with a built-in collar so you dont risk that plastic piece breaking. It all metal and all 1 piece.
