need help hard to start / wont start at all

need some help here guys. The past few days my z has been really hard to start at times. Now it wont start at all. It has been acting up for about a week, some times it will start right up. Just like today it started fine, sorta misses for a second when it first starts up but after that runs great. No surging or missing from idle to 6k. I cam home shut the car off went back to start it after an hour and i have nothing. just when i first hit the key it will hit on a few cylinders and that is it. I looked at my TPS and it had .5v closed but only about 3.5 wide open. so i replaced it. the new unit is the same way.5v closed 3.5 open??? My in car fuel pressure gauge is showing 42psi when i turn the key. and i can smell gas in the intake. Like i said the car ran really good no missing or any thing weard while it was running earlyer. So i dont think its the opti crap. What about the IAC motor? is there a way to test it or clean it? The car a does have a MSD 6Al that i put on there about 4 years ago at that time i had the ignition module fail so i just pluged the msd into it and it has worked great from that day. The Fuel pump is also about 4 years old with about 30k on it. I am stumped here, any help is appriciated.

Smelling gas could mean leaky injector or a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Have you scanned for codes? When was the last time you changed plugs? The IAC could make it hard to start if it's clogged up with carbon. It usually doesn't close all the way when you shut the car off. When you start it, press the gas just a little bit and see if that has an affect on it. Maybe you need to clean your throttle body and your MAF. Theres a good thread here somewhere on cleaning the MAF.

i am going to clean the TB. The car is a 93 so i dont have a MAF. There is a way to scan for codes on 93 with just a paper clip but i dont remember how to do it.

Since it won't start now, have you checked for spark?

good point with the spark. I took a new plug and pluget it into one of the spark plug wires and sat it on the header cranked over the car 3or 4 times and seen nothing.

Your original description kind of sounded like a coil going bad, but hard to tell for sure. If you had a bud that you could swap the coil/ICM assy with, that would help rule it out. Check the IGN fuse under the hood just to be sure it is not an issue. Other possibilities are optispark or harness problems.

found it

shoebox you were right on. I started from the plugs back untill i got to the coil. with a plug in the coil wire i only had a verry weak small spark. i removed the coil wire from the coil and found that the coil electrode was full of that white corossion, Actually i have never seen one that bad before. So i replaced the coil wire and cleaned the coil off, but had no luck. so i then replaced the msd coil with my old factory one and the car fired right up. that coil was only a few years old and i would have never thought that would be the problem. i appriciate the help guys.
