Need help, gears again, also anyone with a LT1 SS camaro inside
Hi guys,
Heres the deal, i posted awhile back about a problem i was having putting gears in my 1997 Camaro SS 6 speed. The chevy dealer is installing them for me. I originally bought a set of Richmond gears 4.10 from Jegs, i ordered them for a series 3 carrier assuming i had 3.42s from the factory, well the dealer had the rear end all set up and they went to put the ring gear in and called me and told me it was to big, an 1/8th inch to big to be exact from what they said. They said i needed a different "case" i asked them if by "case" they meant carrier and they said yes. So i figured maybe i didnt have 3.42s originally and called jegs, they told me maybe i needed the 4.10s for a series 2 carrier, so i ordered those and they showed up at the dealer today, the guys there opened them up, called me up and said these new gears were even bigger than the last set and they wouldnt work either. What am i missing here? Wouldnt one of the 2 have to work??? Is there something different with a SS camaros rearend that i didnt know about? I figured this would have been a standard installation. I feel sick over this whole deal. I told the dealer to install the old ones back in there. I have to send these other gears back, something that i thought was straight forward has turned into a mess. Thanks for any information you can give.

Sounds like you have a Torsen carrier. You need the SLP two-piece paddle kit to make 4.10's fit with a Torsen diff, or I've heard you can grind some stuff to make it fit. Otherwise the paddle that secures the axles won't fit because the ring gear on 4.10's is thicker.
edit- these things http://slponline.com/view_product.asp?PARTNUMBER=64002
btw, if you have a torsen and need those paddles I have a set I took off my old rear I'd let go cheaper than SLP.
