Need help diagnosing a squeel

Ok, first I thought it was the belt. Changed that and it didn't make any difference. After that I changed the belt tensioner, and then the alternator. Finally I thought I had it figured out as the PS pump as it was starting to whine when turning the wheel. Installed my new Turn One PS pump today and put on a new belt, and while it doesn't whine anymore when turning the wheel, it still squeels on startup and for about a minute after if revved. Before doing the work today, it would squeel on startup and then when revved for maybe around 5 minutes after starting. Any ideas or suggestions?

Yeah, I just saw a post about that after searching. It was a cheap Oreillys belt, so i'll probably run by Autozone Monday for a Goodyear belt.

Check for a leaking WP if its squeeling when the car starts up. It may be wet after the waterpump has leaked on the belt for a little while...

Put a dab of GMS sealer or other related gasket sealant on each side of the belt, then start it up. See if it goes away.

I'd pull the belt off and make sure all of the pulleys are clean before re-installing. If not, then hat might tell you what is wrong or may be your problem.

Re: Need help diagnosing a squeel

Replaced the belt with a Goodyear Gatorback belt and it still squeels. Checked the waterpump, and there is no leaking at all. Also checked all the pulley surfaces, and there's no obvious residue on any of them. So just to recap, I've done all the following:
replaced belt (several times)
replaced alternator
replaced PS pump
replaced belt tensioner
checked wp for leaks

Any other ideas before I give up and take it in to the shop?

Re: Need help diagnosing a squeel

perhaps the rubber in your harmonic balancer is ruined, and allowing the 2 pieces to turn separatly... this happened to mine. it is kind of hard to tell with the belt on, but with the belt removed, see if you can move the outer part of the balancer with your bare hands.

Re: Need help diagnosing a squeel

I'll have to check that. I sure hope that's not it as the LT4 SS/Firehawk uses a unique balancer that's supposedly different from either the regular Vette or f-body piece.

Re: Need help diagnosing a squeel

Ok, this is really starting to tick me off now. I was cleaning all the pulleys tonight, and thought, what the heck let's start it up without the belt just to check it. Turns out the squeel is happening without the belt even being on the car, so that eliminates all the pulleys and belt as a source. I also checked the balancer, and it's not loose at all. I also tried disconnecting power for the fans, and verified that they weren't the culprit as well.

This is really starting to drive me batty at this point, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Other than the squeel the car is fine. Power does not seem to be down at all, and I can't feel anything unusual in the driveline when driving.

Tranny maybe? If it's a manual, does it squeal when the clutch is both in and out? Also. Check your tail pipes for gag whistlers.. Just thinking if what can make noise..

Re: Need help diagnosing a squeel

The squeeling at startup happens with the tranny both engaged/disengaged, but the squeeling under deceleration/light load dissapears as soon as the clutch is pushed in.

I'm having a hard time tracking down a noise my new engine is making also. Try using a automotive stethoscope or a put the handle of a screwdriver to your ear to try and find where the noise is coming from.
