Need Help! 12 bolt for stroker??? Look Inside!

O.K. - I have searched and read up on this for 2 weeks. Here is my Situation:

I am currently finishing up my 383 stroker with vortech t-trim project. I will be in and going as soon as the machine shop finishes the heads (within 2 weeks). I have spent a assload of money on this project and I know that i will most likely need a 12 bolt.

There are 2 group purchases going on right now for 12 bolts - and I could save a couple hundred bucks getting one now. So
here is the question -

Since I will have to break it in for the 1st 1-2k miles, and will not be rodding it real hard - should I hold off and buy it later? Or should I just get it and be done? - I mean is anyone currently running a 10 bolt in a high hp set-up? I am kind of leaning on running the 10 bolt I have with the eaton until it goes, but on the other hand, I don't want to risk breaking something real bad (say a shaft) and there sits my camaro - on the back bumper!

Please help me out - any advise appreciated!

Later,

Paul

If you are driving it easy breaking it in and you are not on slicks you will be okay for a while but don't expect it to last on any type of hard launch. I'm in the same predicament as you... I need traction and I know it's only going to get worse from here with heads/cam/stroker/more boost and that 2000 12 bolt is just looming over me. Good luck.

Get a 12 bolt now. The Strange comes pre "broken in" and the moser only takes a couple easy miles and cool downs to break in.

Chances are with any sort of traction you are going to blow up the 10 bolt....

I would definately go with the 12 bolt right now. Why take a chance of the rearend going out after you have spent all of the money on that beast. I'm sure your anxious to get it going so why break the stocker and have even more down time? Plus you can save a couple of hundred bucks right now. If anything order it and have it sitting there ready to go in when the 10 bolt goes.

i'm still on the stock 10 bolt. stock gears too...

it whines a little.... but it's been doing that for awhile.

as long as you don't launch it on slicks, you should be okay.

Yea - that's a good point. And let's be honest - If you built a stroker with a vortech - who's going to keep it under 2k rpms?

It's one of those things, I am already into ths damn project so much it's killin me, and to spend another 2200-2500 on the rearend is hard to bite off - when the rearend in it runs prefect.

I know I need a 12 bolt - sometimes I just need to be guided in the right direction

I was just looking for some input from you other guys who have "been there - done that".

THANKS

Paul

You will be fine with the 10 bolt as long as you dont run slicks and get any major traction.

You could drive around with 1000 HP(exageration ) and a 10 bolt for years on street tires. You would never get traction and the rear would never be stressed. Once you put on slicks forget it.

If you dont see yourself getting traction anytime soon wait, if you do buy it now.

I've been running my stroker with the 10 bolt for 2 years now with no problems. As mentioned before, no slicks have been the key to long life. The tires simply spin instead of breaking parts.

I don't see myself needing slicks very often - but I am going to buy a set anyway. You see I live in what is known as BFE - in the middle of no where. So Most all of the racing I will do will be street racing - probabally on the 315 nitto dr's I have right now.

The closest track around is Rock Mountain Speedway - and it's like 2 hours away from here. The point is that I really don't see me needing slicks on a regular basis - possibly only on the verrry rare ocasion of a serious race for serious cash or if I do decide to take it up to the track for the "street shootout".

So what do you think - would I be fine with my 10 bolt with the eaton posi for the street - or - should I sell what I have - axles, housing, 2 posi's - 4 sets of gears exc... and buy a 12 bolt and just get it over with?

Thanks -

Paul

If you ever want to use slicks...12 bolt.

If you will never use slicks...10 bolt.

So, I guess what I was getting at was - are the 315 nitto's going to be too much for the 10 bolt? or do you think I'll be ok until I go with a full blown drag slick or some e/t's?

Hmmm are you A4 or M6. If you are A4 I would say you will probably be ok. If you are M6 forget it.

I'm in the same dilemma, and am going to reiterate what these guys say. If you're not going to be running slicks, then you should be ok with the 10 bolt. If however, you are going to even think about using slicks at a track, go 12 bolt.
