Need to get the car running already, starter problems still!
Re: Need to get the car running already, starter problems still!
Bought a new one from summit for 153 tooth LT1, and same thing happens. I also Just counted the teeth, all 153 are in perfect condition. More ideas please!

New Idea.... Tried turning the motor over by hand while my buddy was in the car trying to start it. We got it to turn much more, but still wouldnt turn the engine over own its own. What gives? How hard should it be to turn the motor over?

just what i was thinking. it seems to me that maybe his voltage is dropping to far and thats his problem.
i wonder if he tried to jump it with anything?

i would say around 11.00 volts should be fine while cranking. i`ve seen some cars use only 9.00 volts and crank fine though.
you really need to look at the draw that the starter is putting on the battery, 4 starters on a free motor seems awful odd to me. i bet you have something else going on.
just for the hell of it try to use the battery from a completely different car that you can varify for sure is good.
sometimes i have seen a battery with a good surface charge not crank over the motor even with jumping.
at least if you try a known good battery ( like from another car ) you can 100% for sure rule out the battery as the culprit, just because the battery was good yesterday doesn`t mean that it`s still good today.
use the battery from a friends car that starts and runs today right in front of you, that way you can be for sure..

I am starting to think it is electrical also I would check and make sure all the wiring is working correctly. 12 volts on the small wire when the key is on cranking position and 12 volts all the time to the big wire.
Re: Need to get the car running already, starter problems still!
if it was just a voltage problem, why does the starter gear get stuck on the flywheel? The gear doesn't just go out, not turn the motor, then go back in. It goes out, gets stuck and he has to loosen the starter to get it back off the flywheel. Seems like it's some kind of alignment problem.

yes it does seem that way but theres not a whole lot of adjustment that he hasn`t already done and it still didnt work.
if the battery was dead and the starter had enough force to engage all the way, i dont think it would return unless the motor started. he has already tried three starters and 2 flywheels, it cant be much else unless he is using the automatic starter with the m6 or vise versa
Re: Need to get the car running already, starter problems still!
Only 1 flywheel btw... and there isnt a difference between automatic and manual starters. I have a new battery I will be trying in the morning. I will let everyone know how that goes. I did notice that when I turn the motor over by hand AFTER the starter gears are jammed, it comes back in. Which is what would naturally happen if it started the motor. So I'm really banking on this new battery idea, if not, its back to square one. I did meet a couple hardcore race guys that will be assisting with some knowledge in the future should I have more problems.

If only Pep Boys would have given me a brand new battery for free last month, this damn project would be running by now!!!!
Went there today and they finally gave me a new battery. Put it in tonight, and it turns over the very first shot. No crooked starter or anything. Any more tips on getting the motor to fire? Its turning over fine now but I'm not getting anything from it. Motor is .030 over with redone heads, 230/236 112 cam, factory T56, and a Mallory 685 box. Let me know ASAP, want to see if I can get it tonight!!!
