Nasty Noise in the front of the engine?!?
Nasty Noise in the front of the engine?!?
Hey guys,
We just got done installing heads and cam in my buddies '93 Z/28 a few weeks ago. Then our base tune from Ion was WAY off so we drove the car up there and he tuned it in the car. Well, today when we was driving around town, a NASTY squeek or tick or knock, hell I don't know, something started out of nowhere. So we pulled off the belt and started the car, still there so it's either the water pump, opti, or timing set. It's definatly coming from the front. We also pulled the valve covers to make sure it wasn't the valves since it does have the new style Comp R lifters in it, they was all fine. So we're kind of stumped. Can the bearings go out on the opti and it still drive/run fine? It doesn't miss out at all or studder or shake. What about the water pump? It doesn't leak anywhere and the car doesn't get hot. The car runs fine except it has that nasty noise coming from the front. Anyone else had this problem?
We're going to pull off the water pump and opti pretty soon and check them but since we have other projects at the moment, it's kind of sitting till we get enough time. So I was jsut checking on here. LAter, Thanks.

Re: Nasty Noise in the front of the engine?!?
If its that loud it is probably some kind of metal on metal contact so driving it or turning the motor on anymore would not be a good idea for now. Does the noise very w/ RPMS? or is it constant all the time.
Re: Nasty Noise in the front of the engine?!?
Any one of those noises(let alone all of them) that starts after a fresh cam/head swap is a pretty bad sign. Hows the oil pressure looking? Drain the oil and strain it out really well.
Re: Nasty Noise in the front of the engine?!?
Hey guys, we got the car tore apart and found the problem. Noone put locktite on the cam bolts and they backed out. 2 of the bolts snapped and only the 3rd was left holding the cam gear onto the cam. Luckily, the ends of the broken bolts came out with no problem. We replacd those 3 bolts with new grade 8 ones and made sure locktite was used.
