Name/use of tube on LT1 intake???

Im looking to figure out the name of the parts on the stock LT1 intake. its the tube that runs from right in front of the throttle body on the bottom of the duct elbow down to the bottom on the engine. its a long tube that seems to serve no purpose visibly. i was driving my car last night and somehow it just came off, my car died at the stop light. by the time i got back to it it was already ran over and into about 6 peices. i found some tape in my car and got it taped back up and made it 5 miles home. just needing and idea of the name of this peice, what its used for, and how the h*** it possibly could have just came off. i had a transmission mount replaced that day but i didnt think that would be near it.

That is the silencer for the intake. It is not needed, and is commonly removed with the addition of a 1LE elbow.

so it it possible for me to just trim mine down to just a couple of inches so it will have a less chance of falling off again? im still unsure on how it came off in the first place.

You can do whatever you want to with the tube, remove it, shorten it. Just make sure you plug the hole and its sealed tight. You don't want dirt or air leaking in there or you will have a vaccum leak.

The purpose of the tube is acoustic. It cancels a narrow frequency range out of the induction noise. You can remove it, but as said above, make sure you plug it tightly. If you don't plug it, you allow unfiltered, unmetered air into the intake and it won't run right.

go on gmpartsdirect.com and get a 1le intake elbow, the same thing as what the regular z28's have, just withouth the silencer, its already plugged up for you made from molded rubber.

Want to thank you guys for the information on what that silencer tube does.
It is a real pain to remove all the time, so I was going to remove it and just seal up the spot it came out of, so now leaks.
Thanks again for the information.

It won,t cause a vacuum leak since its before the throttle blades but you will get unfiltered, unmetered air into the engine which is what causes problems.
Mostly its the air thats bypassing the MAF that gives you problems.
